COMPANY MEETING.

PEAK TRAMWAYS COMPANY, LTD.

The Ordinary Annual General Meeting of shareholders of the Peak Tramways Company Limited, was held, yester day morning at the Hongkong Hatel, Mr. Henry Humpreys (Chairman) presiding. Others present were, the Hon. Mr. A. 0. Lang. Mr. A. S. Gabbay and Mr. W. Shenton (directors), Mr. G. Rapp Secretary), and Messrs. D. E. Clarke. J. A. Tarrant, W. Morely, D. Cox, A.-A. Alves and J. P. Braga (shareholders).

The Secretary having read the noties convening the meeting.

The CHAIRM' said:-Gentlemen,-

I propose with your permission to; take the Report and Statement of Accounts and Auditors'. Report as read.

We

The Traffic Receipts for the year under review show an increase of $19.797.67 over the corresponding period of last year but the net profits are $1,730.02 less. This is accounted for by the fact that last year made # non-recurrent prost ef $16,763.00 on lovestments realized: the difference represents increased running expenses. The item Unexpired Season Tickets no longer figures as a liability in the accounts as we ceased issuing these in June last. Under the heading of Assets "Mount Cameron Survey $3,000.00 ap- pears for the first time. This survey coat $6,000.00 of which the Government agreed to pay half If nothing eventuates from Lue projected scheme, this 83,000.00 will have to be written off the Company's

books.

I do not think there is anything else in the accounts which calls for any com- ment, but I think shareholders and the General Public would like to know what improvements have been effected and what will shortly be undertaken.

The improvements to the Upper ter- minus, virtually destroyed in the typhoon of August 1923, are nearly completed. They comprise increased facilities for pas sengers in the shape of waiting room and cloak room accommodation also more plat- form space.

They also comprise up to date modera fats in lieu of one that was by no means up to date. One of these the Superintendent will occupy, the other will be let.

Valuable Qualities

Some things are valuable because they are rare, sir; others, are valuable because they are good, but it doesn't follow, that all good. things are expensive.

Kensitas Cigarettes are as good as really good cigarettes can be, and they're certainly not expensive.

The value is in the quality, sir.

TRANSPORT IN THE TROPICS. SIR F. LUGARD FAVOURS THE

FLEXIBLE TRACK VEHICLE.

Sir Frederick, Lugard, whose name is indelibly associated with tropical deɣr-

lopment, has come out in the columns of The Times as an ardent advocate of the flexible track vehicle for commercial transport work in tropical countries, and what he says should have particular in- terest for those of our readers in the Far East who are daily up against the pro- biem.

While Sir Frederick admits that rail- ways are the first essential for the deve lopment of new countries, the question of the best method of providing feeders to the main lines remains. Quoting the late Sir W. Acworth, whose opinion was that "the day of railway development by 1 Sir means of light railways was over, Frederick points out the prohibitive initial cost-and, still more, the cost of maintenance of metalled roads as on
