BOXING.

JACK DEMPSEY'S POSITION.

Jack Dempsey is not doing himself any good by refusing to defend the 'world's heavyweight championship.

Some of those who follow boxing closely forgive the inactivity of Dempsey by ae- cepting his excuses that there is no one for him to Eght, but others less interest- ed in the game, who considered Dempsey as a public character, look upon his ex- euses as an indiention of evasion..

There are many smart boxing men who believe that Harry Wills and Tom Gib bons are not dangerous challengers and to take" that Dempsey has just reasons little interest in the attempts being made to force him to fight. There are many more, however, of the opinion that Demp sey is avoiding Wills and Gibbons and that he has become just another one of those careful champions who will not take

chance.

Although he has always been criticized for refusing to defend his title against a real challenger, Dempsey has been a po pular champion until recently and he could have made a record as one of the few real champions if he had not been Boreasonable about purses and so casial about accepting matches.

It is becoming more and more appar ent that Dempsey never will fight Harry Wils. If he doesn't, he always will have to hear the aereantion that he was afraid of Wills and that he wasn't the daring champion that he was thought to be be fore he became a millionaire fighter.

There are many reasons to believe that Dempsey is not afraid of Wills. Those who knew the champion intimately and who have been, around him when he was training feel sure that he doesn't fear á man in the world. There must be some reason, however, for his refusal to fight Will If he wasn't afraid of the Negro champion, why did he turn down a fight that certainly would have drawn a world's record gate?

Possibly there were political reasons

the match several years ago. Dempsey claims that New York Boxing Commis- Bion refused to permit the match several years ago after the same commission had "forced him to siga. paper on which he agreed to accept the challenge of Wills when a promoter made a suitable offer. Williaus Muldoon, who was chairman of the commission at that time, claims that the commission do not interfere with the match, but that Dempsey blocked it him sell with a demand for an exorbitant purse that no sane promoter could offer. Dempsey will have some supporters in the contention that the New York Box ing Commasion has no right to handle his business affairs and bus no authority in placing him on the ineligible list. The duty of the commission, however, "is not to protect champions at the expense of challengers but to see that the law is ad- ministered fairly to all parties. It certainly is not unfair for any commission to ask that champion to live up to a section of the law that requires him to defend his title once in each Bix months. The champion may, ridicule the New York Commission for setting him down, but he will not laugh if he intends to bght again. His manager may talk about the big offers from other States, but un- loss. Derapsey has changed his mind radi ually about the sum of money be is en- titled to, he will have to fight in Naw York. No other State can pay the freight. We are showing

passed away at the age of sixty. His enthronement in the anxious months after the overthrow of the Tsardom, and when the provisional Kercosky Government was already tottering to its fall, appealed to the imagination of the world. For the first time in many centuries the great Russian Church, with its venerable tradi- tions reaching back historically to the fourth century and in legend to Apostolic days, was freed from the domination of the secular power. Men asked what she would do with her freedom and whether she possessed the spiritual and temporal qualifications which would enable her to rise at once to the height of the new position in which she suddenly found her self. She had sunk into being in many re- spects a mere department of State. There had been no Patriarch since 1721, when Peter the Great suppressed an institution which had exercised immense political power in the past, and which he feared. might aspire to such power in the future. A Church Council met in Moscow in 1917 and revived the office in the person of Archbishop Tikhon. Even

-great Churchman would probably have failed to cope with the persecution which the Bolshevist Government directed ruthlessly against all forms of Christian belief, and neither by nature Dor by training had the new Patriarch the aptitudes and qualities af a great Churchman. He raised his voice loudly in protest against the wicked- new perpetrated under his eyes. He was arrested and kept a prisoner during more than a year for the boldness with which he had borne testimony against it. His life was in imminent peril, and perhaps for the first time since the Reformation the Pope, the Archbishop of Canterbury, and the Free Churches made simultaneous protest against an outrage done to Chris- tianity. The Patriarch's life was spared and he survived his imprisonment" long. enough to see the complete failure of the
