A method of preparing fax that, it is olaimed, will, revolutionise the linen in- dustry, has been invented by Dr. Prit chard, a Canadian now living in England. The preparation of Hax has not changed for thousands of venes. The method of retting" and "scutching" naw employ- ed, substantially the same as that used 2,000 years B.C., in slow, costly, ineffi. cient, and needs a great deal of very cheap labour.

Dr. Pritchard's process takes five or six hours, and the older one about five or six weeks. Mr. J. F. Ward, chief- chemist at the Crookes Laboratories is London, told the Daily News that he and carefully examined the Pritchard process, and had found it feasible and scientific.

PROCESS OF RESTING.
"Dr. Pritchard arrived at the belief that the process of 'retting.' to loosen the kam that hölls the straw to the fibre, actually harms the Bre," he said. "His process does not wat the straw t all The driel fix is put in his machine, where specially deviacil rollers separate the fihre from the plant. The practically straw-free fibres is then put into a soap soluting, which clears way the gum. and passes to a soft water tank., where the last traces of straw are eliminated.
"The flax thus prepared secins to be quite as strong na flax trented in the old way. I have seen linen made from this fix that was perfectly good and beautiful-stuff...
"The method suves. a tremendous amount of labour. it would probably make linen as cheap as cotton, and the straw and the sceils, now lost or desi stroyed, enuli be saved and usefully employed."
He added that the installation of the Pritchard plant in Kenya Colony had been advised. The dicovery would seriously affect the cotton market.

"Cotton can only be grown in certain parts of the world," he said. "Flax caa he grown easily en large tracts of land in nearly every part of the Empire. Not many people would use cotton if they could get linen as cheaply."
