HISTORY FROM TOYS. THE ROAD TO A NEW METHOD OF
EDUCATION.
At the present time two very large toys are attracting a great deal of adult.in- terest. One of them, the Queen's Dulla' House, was among the most popular of all the things exhibited last summer at Wen- bley, and again drew erowils at this year's Ideal Home Exhibition at Olympia. The other. Titania's Palace, travels about the United Kingdom, and wherever it goes raises large sums for the heneft of poor and unhappy children. In the one all the artists and craftsmen of the country have crystallized the British acts and crafts of the early twentieth century? with their discriminating use of the styles of the past and the best of the most milern developmenta

The Queen's Dolls House is the ideal of a modern mansion-the best house that modern art could build and decorate and furnish for anyone who had money to pay for it. There are paintings on the walls, books in the library, drawings in the portfolios: there are also the best of modern sanitatipu, motor-cars in the garage, and wine in the cellars. In And his fellow-craftsmen have given rein to fancy. Faery, chivairy; and religion have their place, besides domestic life. In the one we see our age's pride in its mastery of the art of living. We need no longer, it seems to say, look back to the days of King George II or of Queen Anne for style, grace, and choiceness: to this point of achievement has civiliza tion, with its proper proportion of the arts of creation and of criticism, brought us The other expresses also some of that earning after sanctions outside bodily well-being and intellectual culture which in no age has left man wholly com fortalde, the reaching out after an existence that embraces past, present, and future, ply to transcend them all. But both the maction and the palace are toys: magnificent toys which perhaus mere aevident, perhaps some unexplained mo yement of the spirit. has brought into be ine at the same time.
Both are so beatiful and so delightfni that every one who sees them must wish for more leisure for study than their popu larity aflaws. And, indeed they deserve more particular anul serious study, than they can receive, incause beauty and de- offer. light are nos all that they have to
Each in its degree is a historien doru- ment, the value of which can only increase with time. The Archbishop of Wales re cently alated anew, and with vigour, the elains of historical study: and the pre- seat age knows perhaps better than any. of its predecessors that history includes the arts and crafts and social and domes- tie life, as well as wars, dynasties, and revolutions.
History only becomes real to us when we can inagine the men and women, great or small, who made it, in their habits as they lived. And it is occurred to Sir Nevile Wilkinson (who has good reason for taking very seriously his an- cient and honourable art of tinycraft") House and that the Queen's Dolls' Titania's Palace point the way to a new method of education in this necessary process of imaginative reconstruction. Suppose a central workshop where skill- ed craftsmen could find good occupation in making in miniature the rooms, the churches. the appliances, the surround ings ul. bygone ages in many lands, of which some survive to be copied while of others accurate knowledge is not lacking to our time. Suppose in each provincial and institutional museum a permanent frame, into which such models could be fitted, to be changed at intervals. Better than any picture or description they would give reality to past ages and dis. tant countries, while they trained the taste and fed the love of beauty that is
now too often starved.

Here are some of the more sturtling sartorial figures which occur aineng recent undergraduates 1--
A tall young man who always went down to punt on the river wearing a lung white "cloak.
A youth of Socialist tendencies who attended all debates at the Union Society wearing a blood-red stock, rather incon- grously fastened with a diamond tiesin. Several young men at Magdalen and "The House," who sported dinner jackets of elaret coloured" or deep purple velvet. These were worp with a soft shirt; slight-- ly frilfed, and a very brond, black tie.
