SHIPPING NOTES.

The news of the s.s. Cardily. Bezmak,, Kawutuindi, and Kaspara during the last few weeks has directed attention to the stupendous enterprise embarked upon by the P. and D. They are all new vessels to replace others withdrawh or lost during the war; and they forma part of a monster: inilding programms of 230,000 tons cum- menced six years ago—a programm which, in view of the many difficulties of those post-war years, has demanded no small amount of resource, courage, and tenacity to pull it through. The final stems have now been reached towards restoration of the company's services to Mails arriving in the Colony on Tues the pre-war level. A part of this opera-day and yesterday were brought in as tion has included the assignment to the follows:-From Swatow: as. Hydroagra through fortnightly line to the Far East (6 bags): Bangkok: s.s. MIDDY'S DEATHBED HONOUR.

Of the new liners it may be said that, from passenger's point of view they are far superior in general comfort to the vessels replaced, and this is where the wemanly touch of the Hon. Elaie Mackay, daughter of Lord Inchcape, enue in most usefully. Miss Mackay had ideas about ship decoration. It had always been done by men, and she thought a woman would do it better. Her father was impressed, and he set her designing|| colour schemes for not one new liner, senting prizes at Folkestone School, thril

EMPIRE WIRELESS.

SHARP COMPLAINT FROM SOUTH AFRICA.

The Cape Times commented strongly in a recent issue on the fact that a short time ago the Union Govermeint sent an official cable to London regarding the statement of the new Postmaster-General that the site for South Africa's recip- rocal team wireless station had not yet been determined upon, and that the Im perial Government up to the present had not replied. The paper considers that Mr. Baldwin should take the matter into his own hands without delay and insist that both courtesy and fair play should instantly be extended to the Dominions, who, one and all, it says, have complete I lost confidence in the permanent officials and wireless experts of the British Post Office -

It becomes necessary to may

frankly, the paper added, that if the, British Gov ernment is anxious to provide the ele ments in South Africa hostile to Creat Britain with a reason why they should treat British trade interests with no more concern than trade with Germany. Hol- land, or any other nation with whom they may come to conclude conimercial agree ments, it could not possibly. furnish. any- thing more devastating than this persist- ant refusal of the British Port Office to co-operate in the carefully-determined wireless policy, of two successive Union Governments.
