FLIGHT TO NORTH POLE.

·AMUNDSEN'S GREATEST

ADVENTURE.

NEW ROUTE TO FAR EAST).

Captain Roald Amundsen sailed from Oslo recently for Spitzbergen, whence he is to attempt to reach the North Pole by ai in nt lenst eight and not more than ten hours.

Captain Amundsen (says the Central News) sent the following farewell

"

message:

"It bas memed as if the world has bei come less fond of taking rinks. I have never done anything else in my life." This" is the greatest of them all, but I am verý sure of success, and at the moment of my leave-taking may ventures to say now that this expedition will accomplish more than I have hitherto indicated as my ambi tion."

Captain Amundsen's "ambition" is not merely to reach the Pole by air but to ex- plore the unknown tract of ten million square miles around it for any area of terra ficum which could be used as an aerodrome. If he succeeds the age-long dream of geographers and adventurers may become true-to cross the roof of the world by the great circle' route. It i was found possible to traverse it Cape- Barrow, in Alaska, would be reached in 35 hours air jourtey from London, over 9.800 miles, and Japan the distance re- duced to about 4,000 miles—would be ae- cessible in £fty hours.

an

The two seaplane pilota are to be two fight-lieutenants of the Norwegian Navy, Riiser-Larsen and Dietrichson, who were attached to the British Royal Air Force during the war. They were able recently to accomplish a 2,000-miles' flight round Norway' in two days. Their experience In rising and landing in ice and angw is unequalled andng the aviators pl the world. Captain Amundsen will y

one machine and Mr. Lincol Ellsworth, a wealthy American civil e gineer, on the other.

as kinemato grapher to the expedition.

The fight is likely to begin in the third week of April. In the next few days the party will dy from King's Bay to the ex- treme north of Spitsbergen, which will be the jumping off point. There a wire- less station is to be erected, and arrange- (mezta have been made for an hourly mervice of weather reports to be obtained from Scotland, Siberia, Russia, Alaska, and other points on the Arctic fringe. The journey will begin on the first day when there is no prospect of low-lying fog ahead.

Captain Amundsen hopes to land bis machines directly on the Pole, but in any case he will descend within a radius not wider than forty miles.". Sag observi tions would then be made, and after bear- ings are obtained the exact Polar position would be reached half an hour after wards. If the Pola is found to be̟ at the moment a water, area the landing will be made without difficulty, and sound- ings are to be immediately taken: Should it prove to be an icepack of uneven sur face a reconnaissance will have to be made for a safe spot for the actual descent. From Spitsbergen the distance is 710 miles.

REGULAR FORTNIGHT SERVICE BETWEEN JAVA, CHINA AND JAPAN.

STBAKERS

"Commander K. Prestrad, the Naval As tache to the Norwegian Legation in Lon- don, who assisted Captain Amundsen to prepare his plana, disclosed that the ex- plorer's project is a a much greater on FIBODAS than he has cared publicly to state. TJIKINI

"When I accompanied Amundsen on his TIKARANG ... successful expedition to the South Pole, NIMANOEK said Commander "Prestrud, he talked constantly of what he wanted to be the achievement of his life. He has now em barked to attain it.

To reach the North Pole by air will, of course, is itself be a historic triumph, but Amundsen has a good deal more in view. If at all possible, and with the! least incentive, he will carry on the fight to ́Alaska, another 1,000 miles away. This, of course, would require only thir teen more hours to accomplish, and if "he succeeds the frat chapter of a new story in the world's history will have been completed. It would mean that his life-long dream that the earth can' be circled at its shortest mathematical are would have come true."
