Reading in lonely betreat the tributes offered in Parliament and elsewhere, and in the Press, to the late Marquis Carton, I find myself wondering whether history can be believed. Do these eloquent eulogies present a true and complete pic- care? Is the future historian being told the whole truth? I think not, for from the point of view of Lord Curzon himself his hi ended in political tragedy of a kind which seemed to him deep and poignant. He kept a smiling face before the world, like the great and brave min be was, but he felt his political eclipsa deeply, and I think it must have has tened his end.
I encountered him one night last January Just a little more than two mouths before he died, in the Blue Train running.to the French Riviera. We had been catranged for a year or more, not for the first time in a long acquaintance. The causes of our difference this time. were the Lausanne Conference and bia attitude towards France.
He greeted me with his old cordiality, and we had a long, though sometimes heated, talk in It must have lasted his compartment: between one and two hours. He took very strong exception to a series of news- paper criticisms for which he blamed me in part, for he was always extraordin arily sensitive about newspaper attacks.
But the real climax came when be said. almost in broken sentences, that his CATEET was over, that politically he was "broken,
that he no longer had power." and that he had nothing left! to live for in public life," "though he meant to go on with it, and to do hix duty. My impression is that he was auf- fering from one of those attacks of des pondency which his constant struggle against physical pain sometimes remed to produce, but he appeared bitterly conscious that he had somehow failed in his highest endeavours. He had accom- plished much, be bad been a great and impressive figuris he had towered splen. didly above most of his contemporaries. he had seemed to have shining successes. but he had. missed most of those solid achievements for which his soul craved, he had not written bis name enduringly upon his country's history, and in the
