SADLER'S WELLS.
TO REVIVE HISTORIC LONDON THEATRE.
It has long been established that the only serious criticisia to be made upon the Old Vic is that there is only one of Londoners have to thank it for much pleasure of the best kind, for teaching the rising generation to enjoy great plays and good music, and the Eng- lish theatre must acknowledge its deba to a fine standard of Adelty in per- formance and be grateful for many an actor and actress trained to fine ne

who lire else." South London, those where have to make their account" with a journey tedious, fatiguing, and costly. The obvious remedy for these defects is that which the Duke of Devonshire suggested recently, the foundation of an- other. Old Vic. north of the Thames. The opportunity of a century is at haud in the chance to buy the freehold of Sadler's Wells Theatre. That house has a history far longer and more signi- fcaut than the Old Vic. To save it for use as a theatre would be no more than due hondur to the memory of great act- ing and great actors.
Though Londoners' memories are pro- verbially short, it cannot yet be forgot- ten that Samuel Phelps reigned at Sad- ler's Wells. His management there in the middle of last century was one of the most valuable in theatrical history. He may himself bave fallet short of genius, but the manner and spirit of His productions were admirable and had great influence, and he was able to put on the stage as fewer than thirty plays of Shakespeare, at achievement far sur passing that of any other theatre till. in 1993. the Old Vic.. by producing its thirty-sixth Shakespeare play, completed the cycle." But before the time of Phelps Sadler's Wells had famous players on it, boards. T. P. Cooke, acclaimed for more thair a generation as the best of stage sailors,, had a great run there for his William in "Black Eyed Susan." At Sadler's Walls Grimaldi first ap peared, and there first he sang. "Hot Collins." The husband of Mrs. Sid- dons was one of the proprietors, and Kean recited from the stage

The committee diver which the Duke of Devonshire presides has obtained an option to purchase the ground and structure for $14,200. An architect's estimate puts the amount. required for reconstruction and equipment at £43,000. For the sum of £80,000 therefore Sadler's Wells can be re-established as an Old Vie. for North London.

A LITERARY HOAX. SHELLEY GAINS THIRD PRIZE IN
·POETRY" COMPETITION.
All Johannesburg was convulsed recent ly over a hoax that was prepetrated on three eminent literary anthorities who acted as judges in an Anglo-Dutch prize poso competition on behalf of the maga xine committee of the Witwatersrand University. It is the fashion just now to extol the quality of the literature that is appearing in Afrikaans (South African Dutch), which has only been used as a literary language during the last few years,"
Before a Parliamentary Select -Com- mittee the other day, for example, it was claimed that leading Afrikaans writers. were equal to the best European authors. A wag thereupon copied out one of Shel- ley's lyrics, Time Long Past," and sub mitted it in competition. The fraued passe ed undetected. The judges were very critical of Shelley's effort, and found fault with his diction. But as the poem showed. some promise, they gave it the third prize. The first, and second prizes went to poems in Afrikaans.
