COMPANY MEETING.

HONKGONG TUG AND LIGHTER

COMPANY. LTD.

The first ordinary annual meeting "of -shareholders in the. Hongkong Tng and Lighter Company, Ltd., was held. yes- terday afternoon at the office of Mears. Shewan, Tomes and Co. Mr. R. G. She- Iwan presided, and others present were: Messrs. W. F. Carroll, Li Tse Fong and C. B. Brook (acting for Mr C. PL Marcel) Consulting Committee; Mr. Noel Braga (Secretary); Messrs. D. W, Mun ton. J. Toppin, A. A. Botelho, Tong Hok Ting, and S. C. Cook (shareholders).

After the Secretary, had read the notice convening the meeting.

The CHAIRMAN said:-Gentlemen,- With your permission, as the accounts have been in your hands since the 29th ultimo, we will now take them as read. As you will easily understand, a great part of the period under review wa taken up in preparatory work, and it was not until the first deet of lighters were delivered to us by the builders be tweru. July and December and thẻ túg bonts in November "Inst year that we began to earn anything as alt.

The result for the cine working months shows a defvit of $1,348.89. but seeing that we are quite a new Company and have to make our way against more of less opposition from those interested in the old system of Chinese junks and cargo, bouts and which can only be over- come in time as shippers and consigners realise the advantages of an up-to-date and modern service, I do not think we need be at all depressed at these figures. We have, in fact, to create a good-will of our own, and this necessarily takes time, but our earnings are increasing, and whereas our less in March wna 83,500 it had come down last month to less than 8730. We have, therefore, every reason to expect that is a very short time the result will be on the right side. We began with craft on a modest scale. as we thought it best to feel our way and learn by experience, but it was 1000 evident that the demand, wai, more than the tonnage we had could cope with and that to be able to furnish lighters at short notie we must have a large fleet at our disposal. We have accordingly contracted for & motor junk, a small motor boat, another zug boat, and ten more lighters to be delivered between the middle of May and, the end of August, which, with what we already have," will give us a fleet of 33 lightera. 3 tag bouts, I motor junk and 4 motor boat, but I am in hopes that before very long the demand my again overtake the supply.

As regards the accounts, you will noties that we had $110,989.97 in hand on 31st March, but there will be nothing left of this after we have paid the remaining cost of the new vessels, which will mosut to some $108,000 in addition to about 86,000 more for accessories.

There is still 84 per share uncalled Capital to fall back on, but we do not propose to touch this till we see what progress we make and how woon still fur- ther tonnage will be required. I now beg to propose that the Report and Ac counts as presented bk, adopted and pass- ed, and when this has been seconded I shall be pleased to answer any questions from shareholderk

Mr. CARROLL seconded and the report and nocopata were unanimously adopted. Mr. Mestos proposed that the follow- ing he re-elected us Consulting Com mittee: Mesers. H. M. H Nemuzee, Li Tse Fong, W. J. Carrol and C. E. Brook (to act for Mr. Marcel),

Mr. TOPPIN seconded and this was ear ried unanimously.

These letters, it is said, have caused considerable surprise, if not consterna tion in Chinese commercial circles, especially in view of the correspondence on the subject that has recently been exchanged between the Piece Goods Guild and the Hongkong General Chamber of Commerce.
