The Director, however, took prompt action and Comdr. Tang Chak, Yu medi ated-in che matter. On the 18th, Mr. Taag interviewed the strikers and explain- ed the situation fully to them, but the latter insisted on their terms without any modification. UNEMPLOYMENT AT HOME.
SIR JOHN SIMON RAISES QUESTION
IN THE COMMONS.
Rumours have been current of almost unlimited deposits of coal having been found in this area, and Mr. Wilson
la the House of Commons on March conarmed these rumours. This area bas also been examined by Mr. C. D. Speak, uth Sir Jos Stos, Liberal," raised the ex-president, of the Institute of Mining question of unemployment. A big fact and Metallurgy in London, by Dr.. H.is, he said, that, explain it how you may, Hirschi, of the Royal Dutca Petroleum cast the blame where you choose, Govern Company, and by Mr. A. Moore, Sime ments may change but there has been now over an alarming length of time this Darby and Co.'s mining expert.
situation that with the alteration of a lew thousands approximately week by week, 1.000.000 of 1,200,000 unhappy people are receiving weekly unemploy- inent allowances solely because they have no work to do.
Mr. Wilson, who is acting for a syn dicate, aaid that the coal was the best in quality that had so far been discovered in this part of the world, and he estimated that 2,000,000 tons could be extracted by open cast methods,
Samples, he said, proved that the coal is of excellent quality, hard, black and brilliant, resembling the best coal of England and Australia A moss-covered sample from an outcrop was shown as a proof that the coal, although exposed to the effects of the atmosphere for many years retains its bardaess and brilliancy, and is ideal for storing and bunkering. Coal of this quality is usually associated, with the Carboniferous geologically, period, and it is therefore surprising to learn, that, like all other coal deposits in this part of the world, the Bengkalis coal is of Tertiary age. Although the coal is stratographically similar to that as the Government Collieries at Ombilin, on the west slopes of the Barisan Ranges, it is admittedly of much better quality.

Mr. SNOWDEN, Labourite, expressed the opinion that if we could restore our for eign trade to a pre-war gure we should have reduced unemployment to what was regarded as its normal condition before the war.
In connection with this ques- tion he thought that the restoration of the gold standard would have advantages which would far outweigh possible dis. advantages.

He commended the electricity scheme of the Lite Labour Government as one which could be justified on every conceivable ground as it would find employment for large numbers of men and bring this country up to a standard of efficiency which would compare with other coun tries.
