PRIDE OF COUNTY.
PRINCE OF WALES ON GLORIES"
-OF DEVON.
"The Prince of Wales made a delightful speech when atsending, at the Connaught. Rooms last month, the annual dinner of the London Devonian Association. Speak ing immediately after the "iminortal memory" of Drake and other Deven wor thies had been silently honoured, his Royal Highness spoke of the genius of the great sea-captains of old. and declared That the county's part in the creation of sea-power was her great contribution to the Empire. He went on to refer to a vittue which he extolled county pride, as peculiar to our nation, and one which it must be hard for a foreigner to under stand, and in a happy vein be contrasted the incentive of local tradition and the mere excess of local feeling."
Nearly 700 members and their friends were present, but the gathering was in the nature of a big family affair, that idea being pleasantly cultivated by the dialectical phrases and homely quotations! that adorned the handsome souvenir pro

Before entering the hall-a number of presentations were made to him, and amongst those thus honoured was Mr. John Martin, the founder of the Devonian movement in London.

on the Duchy property and other parts of beautiful and glorious Deven, and I hope to spend many more. You have all met here to-night to talk over old times! and exchange memories of Devon, and 1. too, am very glad to have my own pleas ant recollections of that county brought
(Cheers.) to mind..
An Englishman's affection for his own county is a thing peculiar to our nation, and one which it must be very hard for a Foreigner to understand. It is almost impossible to explain why a comparatively small gro graphical division should have such a strong hold on those who are born and bred within it. Yet is dogs have that hold, and we all know there is much more TO-DAY in it "than mere geography. stranger, I suppose, the two banks of Badgworthy Water lock very much alike; yet you could tell him at once that they are utterly different-because one bank. is in Devon and the other in Somerset: and of course, thee is all the difference in the world beteen Devonshire creat and Cornish cream-(laughter)-while any true Devon man, or any true. Dorset man, can tell with his eyes shut which side of the boundary a mug fcider, was [brewed! (Laughter and cheers.)
To
A SPIRIT OF GREAT VALUE. You find that spirit-a man's pride in his own county all through our his tory. and it has undoubtedly been a great value to 4 as a nation. It has. for in- stance, heee the backbone of our splendid edanty regiments, which had such a won- derful record in the last war, and, to a great extent. it made possible the crea tion of the Territorin Force. In war and peace, in work and in play, it has spurn en say a man to go just one better than he thought he could, for the bonour of his county. (Cheers.) In Devon, particularly, you have a wonder- ful example of it. Devon's greatest con- tribution to the Empire has been the part her sailors played in making us a great sea Power and all who are familiar with the old records of those famous sa captains whose memory we have just housured, will agree, I think, that what really inspired them was the feeling that they were men of Devon, who must live up to the tradition of Devon. (Cheers.) When Sir Henry Newbolt says in that song which you all know, that dreaming all the while oi Plymouth Hoe,' he is probably not far (Cheers.) And since Drakeje wrong. day-wany fine things have been done, all over the Empire, by men and women who inspired by the thought and the
were tradition of their own corner of England. (Cheers.)

EROS IN NEW QUARTERS.
Escorted by seven workmen and with a four-ton lorry, as his chariot Eros, late of Piccadilly-circus, was translated to County Hall, Westminster, on February. 19th, to await the erection of his tem- porary pedestal on the terrace of the headquarters of the County Council. No official welcome awaited him at his new quarters, but one member of the Coun cil gave bim an affectionate pat on the foot. He was finally placed on the pavement of the terrace, safe and sound after a somewhat eventful journey
