Mr. Charles L Wisener, assistant general manager of the Harris Company, explained that the fact that goods can be shipped at lar cheaper rates over the lung distance South American ports was probably due to the greater anxiety of the shipping companies to build up their South American trade. The fact remained, however, that the South American rates were governed by competition. Even before the war, Mr. Wisener said, French shipping rates were cheaper than British, and this probably because the French worked their boats more cheaply, or were, content with less profit

LECTURE AT 93.

SIR BRADFORD LESLIE'S FEAT.

Sir Bradford Leslie, the engineer, who will be in August and only a year ago planned a new liridge across the Hooghly at Calcutta, gave a lecture last month at the Institution of Civil Engineers, Great George-street, S.W., before the Perman- ent Way Institution. Speaking in a firm voice, says a London, paper, he did not. hesitate over a single word in a speech. full of technicalities. He produced from the platform table two specimens of stock' rail each a foot long and many wooden models of older type rails and while speaking of their properties of weight carrying and non-conformability to the curvature of fish bars held them.up for inspection.

He turned to point to diagrams on a nuniber of big charts hanging behind him, darting from one the other without a Accond's besitation. At last, when the younger experts gave him hearts applause for his thoroughly modern treatment of his subject, he reddened, murganred his thanks, and, with a smile, sat down after standing for more than 90 minutes on the platform.

The bridge he planned recently is to replace the one of the floating type which he hailt in 1874 and bus lasted nearly 25 years longer than the period for which he guaranteed it. Re still works in the mornings as assiduously as younger nten, scorns the use of taxi- cabs, and in his leisure prepares his reminiscences for publication.

SAVED BY 'PLANES IN THE ALPS. 3 MEN SNOWBOUND FOR 6 DAYS; After they had been missing for nearly a week, and when all hope of their being found alive had been abandoned, threa skiers who were lost in the Alpine range forming the Swiss-Italian frontier were found and saved from starvation by nero- planes last month.

The skiers were Professor Staub, of Zürich, and two companions, all expert. skiers, who left Fexthal for the Marinelli Hut, on

the Italian side of the frontier)

range.

Heavy snowstorms rendered their re.... turn impossible, and great anxiety was felt for their safety, as it was not knowa

if the hut was packed with pravisions.

An aeroplane attempted to reach the hut, but was driven back by blinding snow. The following day three Swisa military machines Rew over the but and sighted the three nich, who were appar- eatly well. The airmen dropped them a supply of provisions, together with a message that they would return again if necessary and a letter from Professor Staub'e wife exhorting him to keep up his courage.

TEACHING ASIA.

TO MAKE AEROPLANES AND POISON GAS.

When the House of Commons went into Committee of Supply, recently, on the motion that 36,000 men of all. ranks be maintained in the Air Service in Great Britain and Ireland and abroad exclusive of those serving in India, Mr. Thurtle (Lab Soc., Shoreditch) moved to reduce the number by 35,000 men. His object, he said, was to arraign the waste and futility of all armaments.

Mr Lansbury (Lab-Soc., Bow and Bromley) said that after a great war, in which 11,000,000 of the Bower of the youth of the world were sterificed, to pre- pare for another war which would pro- duce more terrible results wie sheer Junacy, We were taching the peopler in Asia to make arroplazes and prison gas; (Continued on next Columa),
