[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT-]

EDINBURGH, February 11th. Scotland beat Wales at Swansea by paints to 1. It was the third successiva victory of a Scottish Rugby texin on Welsh soil, and the Bfth win at the ex- pense of Wales since international Rugby was resumed after the war. To say that the game worked out pretty much ne ecrding to plan the Scottish pinn-would be no exaggeration. The team was built for attack and not defence. The argumen that it is not a sound side might easily be urged, but the best answer to that is that it was a winuing side. Therosis a somewhat overworked saying that offence is often the best form of defence. Seldom has there been a match which has better exemplified that truth. The saving of tries is nearly always of sendary im- portance to the scoring of them. As happens not infrequently, a team which can rise to great heights can also sink to great depths. The Scottish side. had that failing. Happily, however, the men were on the heights most of the time. The backs played with inspiration and in- agination, and showed great skill and pre- cision in the execution of every move- prent. In the giving and taking of passes they never seemed to falter., No passes were dropped. Neither was a Scoring opportunity allowed to pass with- nut a great effort being made to exploit Lit With Team made op. of entirely different material. Wales employed dif- ferent methods. These methods did not fail altogether. They simply failed to realise expectations. With a team built for defence, Wales relied on defence to keep the score within reasonable limits until the formidable pack, which had strock terror into English hearts at Twickenham, had reduced their uppun ents to comparative, if not complete, in- effectiveness. In other words, the Welsh forwards were to play the part of the steam roller, before which not even the stoutest defence could stand Indred the Septs showed vigas of racking late in the second half. But the game was fac advanced before there was anything to show for all the vigurous work of this. redoubtable forward ilivision. The steam roller tactics were countered first by a Benttish right who, especially during the first half, were doing quite as effective work, and, second, by the speed of the Sottish backs. The sutstanding feature of the match was the running of Inn Smith, who revealed remarkable speed, and scores four tries-all great efforts. Smith was wisted to a very large extent by G. P... Macpherson, who was the master mind in the Scottish back divi sion, and played a great game. As a com- bination the Scottish three-quarter line's can be written down as great success. J. B. Nelson played splendidly at half- bark. Although overweighted, the Scot- tish forwards showed rare courage.

The Scots team were Full back: J. Drysdale (Heriot's F.P.). Three-quar ters: A. C. Wallace (Oxford University), G. G. Aitken (Oxford University), G. P. S. Macpherson (Oxford University), and L. S. Smith (Oxford University). Half- burka: J. C. Dykes. (Glasgow "Acade- micals), and J. P. Nelson (Glasgow Academicals). Forwards: J. M. Banner- man (Glasgow High School F.P.), D. S. Davies (Hawick), A. C. Gillies (Watson- ians). R. Howie (Kirkcaldy), J. C. B. Ireland (Glasgow High School F.P.), J. R. Paterson Birkenhead Park), D. J. MacMyn (Cambridge University), and J. W. A QUIET CUP ROUND.

The second round of the Scottish Cup produced only a few sensations. Ten First League clubs won through. There were two notable performances--Bo'ness went to Kirkenidy and drew with Baith Rovers, and Armadale, playing at home, maniged to draw with Aberdeen. Only three First League clubs were defeated- Heart of Midlothian, Queen's Park, and Ayr United-and they fell to clubs of their own class Two Second League elabs, Broxburn United and Arbroath, and one Third League club, Dykehend, have qualified for the next round.

Queen's Park made a very poor show at Airdrie; they showed form far below their normal. By the fall of Heart of. Midlothian, Edinburgh is, without a re presentative in the Gap; but, candidly, no one expected them to get far in the competition. No surprise, also; was felt at the fall of Ayr United; they are the bottom lot in the League, and this season are not of much account.

SOCIAL EVIL IN EASTERN PORTS.

In an account of her work as an M.P. Lady Astor mentions that the Bishop of Singapore asked her to take up the very difficult question of the social evil in Far Eastern ports, and the best way of pro- tecting and belping men of the Navy and the merchant marine in that part of the world. An advisory committee has been set up to advise the Colonial Office in these matters, of which Lady Astor is the only Parliamentary member. The first meeting of this committee was held the other day, and Lady Astor expresses hur belief that it will help the "Colonial Office to keep in touch with the best expert and the best public opinion.
