After providing $70.000 for the depre ciation of steaners the General Managers recommend a dividend of 3 per cent. per Annum (84 per share) to be paid on the working of the Company for the year. ending. December 31st, 1924, subject to the confirmasion of shareholders at the annual general meeting to be held on Saturday. March 28th, 1923.

SHANGHAI TRADE..

Mours. Ilbert & Co.'s Piece Goods Market Report dated March 13th says:

The imparved tone of our market men- tioned in our last two reports has been fairly well maintained.. Clearances generally have not been quite so favour able as inst week, but yet fair quantities have gone into consumption.

Auction prices were steady, with the exception of Fast Blacks, which were about 3 maci down.

This is the off season for Fast Blacks, ia addition to which the demand from Yangtze Ports has again been pear, the presence of large numbers of troops in the Chinking and Wuhu areas still causing uneasiness, and dealers ETU adopting a cautious attitude.

it would seem that our market is not at the moment prepared to pay the prices asked by Aanchester, as there is gill a fairly wide margin of difference in re- placing cats, and although there has been a certain amount of enquiry, very i Hittle business has actually been booked.

TAX SHOCK FOR ISLANDERS.

JERSEY, GUERNSEY, AND MAN

"ASKED TO PAY MORE.

The Government are considering what steps they can take to secure from the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man their fair share of the costs of the war.

Sir William Joynson-Hicks, the Home Secretary, is likely to raise the matter iu the House of Commons.

The position concerning the Channel Islands is remarkable. At the beginning of 1923 the British Government "invited Jersey to pay £395,000 and Gaern $975,000 annually to the Imperial Ex chequer.

£106.000 IN PENSIONS.

Freser's attitude has been that "neither legally nor constitutionally can she agree to make any contribution, not withstanding the fact that pensions and allowances disbursed by the Ministry of Pensions to ten in Jersey total £46,000

The answer of Guernsey to the sugges tion that the island should contribute £275,000 a year to the Imperial Exchequer was an offer of one payment of £220,000. Last year the Guernsey income tax was fourpence in the pound. The duties on tabacco, spirits, and sugar are almost negligible. A bottle of whisky costs six chillings.-

SUGGESTIONS.

Action now rests with Parliament, and the Government have decided to revive the whole matter.

The suggestion of the Government to the isle of Man was that the statutory contribution of the island should be rais ed to £150,000 a year, including the tem porary war contribution of £20,000 for twelve years, and that the Accumulated Fund of the island should be reduced by

I think sometimes the word I is just another name for "hope." You might fancy that it was curiosity that made you smoke your first Kensitas-no, sir, it was really hope, the hope that you would. find Kensitas a really good cigarette, better than the kind you had been smoking.

But it is a fact, sir, that after you smoked that first Kensitas and experienced the cool, rare old bind of prime Virginia you continued to stoke Kensitas, because you found that Kentitas se
