one to say of the one-step? It al ways seems that its proper function is to open a dance and to clear the Boor at the end.
Mr. Maxwell Stewart and Miss Bar- last year's champions, are Miles, champions again, with the first world's champion, Alr Victor Sylvester, part- nered by his slim wife- divinely matched dancing couple as runners up. Neither of these men is in any sense a show dancer. Championship form in ballroom dancing seems to demand the resolute, suppression of expression, per- socality, temperament. A superb aC- curacy and deftness of movement, a poised balance the "qualifications of trained and special physiques plus an inherent sense of rhythm-alone are demanded.

was the exact bold? And so on. But to-day the con- test appeals to a special and not to a general public. It demonstrates perfect dancing; but it is not exactly a a criterion either of style or of step, and it makes no fashion. The style, moreover, the popular style. If it was, the foxtrot, that more informal of dances, would now be in the last stages of senile decay.

SANITARY ENGINEERS:&•
In 1910, when the C. E. WARREN & CO., hotel ballrooms first opened for general dancing after dinner, in 1929, when tea dances came in, and in 1921-23 when supper dances and the rogue of the cabaret began, the dancing crowd was uneasy about its dancing It sought guidance. I was influenced by rumours as to fashions in style and step. watched exhibition dancers studiously, and practised cesiduously, and asked advice.

whereas the latter-day foxtrot is almost SCARAMOUCHE”
the most natural rhythmic motion in the world something inherent in the humaa make-up and animated by a pri mitively simple yet melodic music It has no rules save those dictated by a natural good taste-quietness of style, economy of movement. Within the simple irait of a good style, everything is permissible now, even a slight shoulder away. But in the world of championship contests the foxtrot is strictly limited, formal, orthodox, and done in a style which already has a "professional look. The champions only express the ultimate perfection of ballroom dancing, refined and standardised to a plan, where even the fashionable dancing crown, who devote much of their leisure to the social accomplishment, are not prepared to follow.
ROUGH ON RAMSAY. WOMAN SOCIALIST'S CANDID. CRITICISM.
حده
Mrs. Philip Snowden, addressing the Women's Canadian Club at Montréal on January 19th on the subject of the first Labour Government in Great Britain, declared that Mr. Ramsay MacDonald's errors were consequent upon bis stupend- ous effort to handle the portfolios, of Prime Minister and Foreign Office at the same time, a task which, together with his other work, induced abnormal weari ness and fatigue. "Undoubtedly." MIS Snowden declared, we were the victims of the worst political leadership of modern times-our own leader, the man who took too much upon himself.
Mrs. Snowden laid stress on the evolu tionary character of the Labour pro gramme, which did not wish to socialize anything unless it was it for Socialism, The programme advocated by the Labour
Party was educational and parliamentary methods. Alluding to the attitude of the Throne to the Labour Party she said:- "The British King and bis Court be- haved to British. Labour with so much courtesy, dignity, and fair play, that they have raised themselves immeasurably in the estimation of the working classes of Great Britain and have established them- selves for ever, so far as we can see
