This raises one more of the many puzzling points in connection with pass port law which crop up from time to time. For although, The Imily Chronicle learns," the Pasapors Office is within its rights in making such Inquiries of has bands departing alone, for foreign country, neatisfactory replies to the questions do not entitle the officials to refuse a passport.

The wife concerned in the present case bas a private, income, and even if her husband does not return is not likely ever to be destitute. Also, he only asked for the passport for a period of three months, it being a business visit to the States.
BAD WINNERS AT BRIDGE.
A good game of bridge is often spoiled by the irritating mannerisms of one of the players. I do not mean that these manerisms are rude ch-interded. Usually the offenders are perfectlyun- conscious that they are annoying their partners and opponents.
There is a man of my acquaintance who has a stock of remarks which are pro duced at intervals and are never varied When his opponents fail to make their contract he will say, as he gathers the first trick which loses them the hand, "That's one on the clock." At the zext, in tone of bland astonishment, he' will say, "Why, partner, that's another on the clock," This is bad enough when you are his partner, but should you be on the losing side it is maddening.
Another of his bridge habits is to take a finesse, und, should it fail, to look prouchtully at the winter of the trick and say, why, you had it all the time! This may sound humorous, but when it 1 repeated time and again it is more than annoying.

Mr J. Bennetts Naturally, opinions liffer on what is the must beautiful sound it the world. Some Mr & Mrs Bension think that there is nothing so wonderfui Mr H. The Mr G. Bowack peal of a cathedral organ awes as well as pleases, while to mother there can Mrs O. E. Brown no sweeter sound than the croon of her Mr T. B. Brown baby.
Mr B. C. Bardin To my mind the most beautiful rousic Mr G. W. Barne that the world can give us is not the Mr A. Campbell blast of an organ nor the strains of a Mr E. Carlton violin-it is the song of the forest. There Dr. Christopherson are few joya comparable with that of Mrs Christopherson

SILENCE.
The wind is the tonal background of much of nature's music. Its song mur- ours of joy as it rustles through the corn- feld, and the gelden glory of the corn provides a feast for the eyes which ar- certantes "this beauty. You can almost distinguish the different sounds made by the various crops. The deep voice of the wheat, for instance, as it sways to the wind might be the bass singer, the higher song of the harley is the soprano's voive, and the shriller but sweet sound of the oats is sometimes the tenor, sometimes the choir boy's clear treble.
The chimes of a distant village church have a melancholy charm. The roar of a great city has a grandeur that is musical at night, although the same sound by day seems barsh and hideous. Night softens and purifies many things, and sound most of all. Some can remember the music- terrifying and impressive-that they beard in the howl of a shell during the war. We were all able to tell the type of guns from the awful voices of the projectiles as they rushed overhead on their erraads of death.
