During the war, we all know that when our greatest difficulties occurred and people who had never thought about chemistry at all-were stuck, it was to the chemist and the engineer they had to turn to solve their problems, to provide thein with armaments, and to win the war. I sincerely trusted that with that lesson still ringing in their ears, it would be recognised even by the uninitiated, that science and research were not the fads of the few or the follies of the aged, but were vital necessities to the existence of the nation, and never more so than at a time of daancial emergency."
Sir Alfred Mond, who used these words at a dinner of the Chemical Society, might have added that, although the terrible waste of human life caused by the Great War can never be recovered, yet there is the hope that the enormous material lossey may be made up by new knowledge and strenuous endeavour.
Let us attempt a very short, and even sketchy, review of what has been done during 1924. AMAZING BROADCASTING.. For less than two years has wireless broadcasting, existed on an organised scale in Great Britain. In September, 1984, the number of licences issued, in that country, for receiving sets, was about a million. In the Supreme Court, before the Chief Justice (Sir Henry Gollan) yesterday, Messrs. W. G. Humphreys nad Company sued the Tai Kai Grm for $1,770.03 and
439.55 for goods sold and delivered. The defendant firm put forward the plea that the goods were ordered by a foki of the firm, but not on the firm's behalf.

Mr. Jenkin explained that the defen- dants were de... piece goods, und contract with Messrs. entered into a Humphreys for a quantity of singlets. Details as to these goods were given by

foki of the firm named Au Yee Chuen The defendant firm alleged that the con- tract with the firm's chop on it was re- turned to a broker by foki who was cot Au.
Delivery of four cases of singlets was made on May 8th of last year, on a request for delivery bearing the Erm's chap. A promissory note for $1,775.87 was chopped with the firm's chop and was sigued by Au. Further goods were sup- plied to the firm later in Alay, and another promissery note for $419.30 chepped.
Evidence was then given by the broker and the compradore of Mesars. W. G. Humphreys & Co.
For the defendants, Mr. Alahäster szid that on two occasions Au took the de- livery in two instalments Their exidence was that the firm never got delivery of the goods. In regard to the contract A was a salesman in the arm at a salary of $30 per month. He left the firm on June 2nd, to go to Caston, and that was no doubt when he took the goods. He had not returned from Canton:

When plaintiffs went to the shop and asked for payment for the goods that was the very first intimation defendants had that the contract was entered into De fendants said that Au was one of their fokis and when he returned from Canton the matter would be put right They' were asked by plaintiffs to put this into writing, and did so, but it was capable of being translated in two different ways.
