Enclosure No is a list of the Rents paid annually by twenty parties, being the largest Contributors to the Land Tax; but it must be remembered that the properties therein referred to comprise counting Houses with accommodation for warehouses for the storing of goods, separate houses for the partners, as well as dwelling houses built on speculation let for hire.
Thus, for instance, Messrs Dent & Co pay for property an annual ground rent of £737.12.14,
and may be described as containing a mansion for the partners of the House; on the same hill, their former residence; a most imposing edifice occupied by 12 Assistants, and used as a Counting House, and a Patent Slip estimated to be worth £6,000, with extensive warehouses, together with 26 Chinese Houses, each paying a rent to the landholder of about £20 per annum.
In another locality the Firm has five large houses which are rented to Merchants and Storekeepers at about £250 each per annum.
