NEW STEAMERS FOR P. & 0. LAUNCHED ON THE CLYDE.
Two strainers were, launched by Messrs. Barclay Curls & Co. on the Clyde recently for the & O.. Company's Australia Service. These are the taping and Comoria. The former was named by Viscountess Inchcape and the latter by her daughter, the Hon. Mes. Alexander Shaw. Viscount Inchenpe;' Chairman of the P. & O. Company, was present at the launching.
Speaking after the launching ceremony. Lord Lochcape referred to the old ass13-
ciations of the two companies and to the good work done by Messrs. Barelay, Curie & Co., for the P. & O. and asso- ciated companies. Shipping aml ship- building had, he added, fallen on very bad times during the past few years, and up to two or three days ago the out- look for those engaged in the industry and in commerce generally was not very bright. He believed, however, that now there would be a stable Government for a good many years to come and that Com- manism and Bolshevism in this country were not only dead hat darned. (AP- plause)

The news, telegraphed by the corres pendent of The Times in Berlin, of the breakdown of the International Confer- ence on South American Shipping Ser vices was much discussed in London ship-
plag circles recently. The point on
which most attention was focussed was the indication that the breakdown of the conference was due to the stiff attitude of the German representatives.

It is understood that attempts were made, among the shipping representa tives of the various countries interested in the South American trade, to agree upon passage rates and the proportions of the earnings that should be allotted to the various companies under a puol- ing arrangement
Possibly fact that the conference

held in Berlin encouraged the German representatives to present de- mands which the officials of the compan- ies of other nations were not prepared to accept. It seems that the Germans demanded the largest share of the pass- enger trade, which is chiefly between Portugal, and South America. German companies represented at the conference included the Norddeutscher- Lloyd, the
Stinnes Company,
The repre sentatives of the other nations were pre pared, it is known, to treat with the Gormans in a reasonable spirit, bat the terms presented to them were such that, in spite of the continuance of the confer ence for several days, in the hope of a more conciliatory attitude on the part the Germans, their acceptance was con- sidered to be quite impracticable.
