Thiountritious slopes of the Island of Corsica, of Algeria, of Tuscany, and the Mediterranein
coasts generally are the homes of the " Bruyere which is severally called French Brian, old briar, or real briar. It is a wonderful sight to sed, in the month of February the great moun- tains of these regions thick with bruyere shrubs. bedecked with masses of blossom which perfume the air with their sweet scent, and then to reflect upon the intri cate labours involved before the roots of the shrubs can be converted into high class pipes. Many substitutes have been tried, but for smoking 'burposes no wood can to any way equal the "bruyere" for; toughness, durability and grain. The

teee, but rather a shrub which attains, as a rule, a height of from nine to ten feet. The branches have no value: it is the root, roughly the size of a man's head, round in shape, which is extracted from the earth, which is eventually used for the how of the pipe. These roots are trans ported on muleback down the valleys and subsequently dispatched to the saw mills. On arrival at the mills the roots are carefully cleared and all dirt and grit removed; the circular as is then applied, cutting the heavy mass into slabe about 1 to 2 inches thick. On these slabs ar,traced the rough shapes of the future pipe howls and then eit nerordingly. The rough blocks thus ob tained are then placed in huge copper cauldrons and boiled in water for 12 hours. There is one thing I should like to correct and that is the erroneous in pression which is prevaleat that the modern dark-finished pipe is made from extra old or specially searched wouch The colour of a pipe has nothing what over to do with the age or condition of the wood. The natural colour of bruyers is a pale stras, and in the finishing only friction butag is used to obtain the beautiful polish. The bowl with cap. stant smoking gradonily darkens to the rich mahogany colour. That the UT style in colour is slowly being appre cinted is due to the fact that only bowls with the most perfect grain can be used and as these are few and far between no pipe manufacturers are anxious for the craze to become too popular.--Aura. AN ABANDONED ATTEMPT.
The quest of a motto for Lond in appears to have come an end. A committee of the London County Council, which has long been considering the matter, has reported that it is impossible to reach a unanimous decision and has recommended that fe at- tempt be abandoned. Many augustinna have been made, some of them in lettera published in our own columna. Latin, which bas a traditional support and the advantage of concentration, has been matched with every form of English, Biblical, poetic und colloquial. The past has been praised and the future holdly anticipated. Every school of motto-writers has had its repre- sentative from the frankly boastful to the deceptively modest. The result is a cautious refusal of all their persuasions with which it is difficult to find fault. To sore it may, seem uncourageous. It may Baid that, with all the languages nud literatures of the world at their disposal, the Council should have been able to discover some phrase that satisfied them. Some day, Terbapa, they will. Chauce may succeed where diligence has failed and a proposal be made that will command unquestioning support. Meanwhile it is wise not to force a decision.
The truth probably is that London la too old to undergo any form of rechristening. Nothing could be briefer, more significant or more inclusive' than its name. Beside it any motto newly chosen, and so дой endowed as ancient mottoes are with the strength of association, would stand in danger of being either an anti-climax` or a piece of braggadocio. To write small were false humility; to write large a redundant "flourish. London, moreover, has acquired so many divergent mesnings in the hearts and minds of the King's sub- |jecta that any attempt to summarize them would exclude more than it embraced. Many of the existing mottoes of great cities, which age has made to seem appropriate, had a very restricted origin. Arising from some local, feadal, or commercial incident, they have outgrown their beginnings, have expanded in significance as the cities to which they belong have expanded in power, and have at last become so much a part of civic history that no one pauses to question their representatiioright. In London such an easy and natural growth is no longer passible. A choice, if inade now, would be instantly challenged by millions of critics, all of whom had, in their own peculiar loyalties, an excellent ground for criticism. The problem is analogous to that of nam- ing a great man who, by some unaccount." able omission of his godfathers and god mothers, was not named in the days when his obscurity, made it easy. Any solution of it will seem almost inevitably to lack either courage or restraint. The Council are justified in refusing to choose hastily between such unpromising alternatives and allowing London, for a little time longtr, to speak for herself without unnecessary prompting.The Times.
