DUNLOP CAPITAL
MR. JUSTICE EVE ON THE APPALLING FIGURES.
...
Before Mr. Justice Eve in the Chancery Division on November rath application was made for the sanction by the Court of a scheme for the reduction of capital of the Dunlop Rubber Co.
Mr. A. Sims, for the company, stated: that the nominal capital was £20,000,000. divided into 8,000,000 preference shares of £r each and 15,000,000 ordinary, A, B, and C shares. The whole of the preference shares had been issued, and also the ordi nary shares, with the exception of 108,680. The gross loss amounted to £12,382,000. but that sum had been reduced by the appropriation of certain reserves pad other items, the result being a net loss of £10,327,3-42. The bulk of the loss was the item of £8320,000 in the balance-sheet for the year ended August 31st, 1921, which arose through the depreciation in the market prices of raw materials, mainly rubber and cotton, and partly by the exchange on the company's foreign business. The loss of £8,000,000 odd in 1821 was reduced by the following year, when the company made profits amount- ing to 2388,000. These were applied to the reduction of the loss, which in June, 1922, stood at £7,730,000.
The C preference shareholders had agreed to the cancellation of 4. per share, making them of the nomina!

Counsel read an affidavit by Sir Eric Geddes, chairman of the company, in OFFICES 31D, WYNDHAM STREFY, support of the petition.
His Lordship said he understood there was litigation pending between members of the company.

Counsel: Yes, very extensive litiga tion, but it does not affect this scheme at all.
His Lordship: Are the shareholders to get nothing from those who embarked on this speculation?

past directors in relation to some mat- ters, but I don't think the litigation. touches, for example, the company's hold ing in Dunlop Plantations, Ltd. scheme was propounded by the recon- atituted board without the slightest idea that this litigation, would be taken.
Counsel went on to deal with the losses made by the subsidiary companies, and said it was proposed to reduce the capital from £20,000,000 to £9,472,427 The capital woulda then be increased by the creation of new ordinary shares.
His Lordship remarked that these. schemes were very often the interment, be might almost say the cremation, of companies. It might be wise to cut the loss, but there was great difficulty, once the loss was cut, in anyone investigating the matter, to see whether someone ought to be made responsible for some of the money. The Sgures appalled him, added, as he was unaccustomed to deal- ing in millions every day; but the resolu tion had been passed with due formality, and he saw nothing to suggest that the. arrangement was unnecessary. He would therefore approve and confirm the duction.
OCCUPATION STATISTICS.
ONE AND A HALF MILLION METAL WORKERS.
Te-
A British official wireless message sent from Leafield on December 8th, says:
The occupation statistics of the 1921 Censias for England and Wales" are pab- lished to-day. The working population is divided into 1,000 occupations grouped in. 32 classes. In each of five occupations the number of male workers employed exceeds 1,000,000. Those engaged as metal workers head the list and this occupation is followed by over 1 million males. One million four hundred thou- sand males are engaged in, transport and communications. Agricultural pursuits are followed by over 1,170,000. Com- merce, finance and insurance, excluding clerks in occupation, 1,060,000 males and the number of males engaged in mining and quarrying also exceeds one million.
Among women, personal service claims 1,672,000 and it represents the most im- portant sphere of women's work so far as the number employed is concerned. Next in the list are the textile workers. There are over 200,000 women engaged in this occupation, whereas the number of men. similarly employed is only 372,000. There are over half-a-million women employed as makers of articles of dress and a low short of that figure are employed as shop assistants cr in other forms of business sad commerce The return shows that there are nearly 430,000, women clerks in England and Wales and 300,000 women are classified as professional The vast majority of these äre school teachers, music teachers and sick nurses, but 2,000 of them are journalists and over 1,200 are doctors. The number of women dentists had reached 280 when the census was taken but as is" the case with regard to both barristers and solicitors, of whom only are shown in the 1921" return, there has probably been a very consider able increase in the past three years.
The domestic work of woman in her own family does not count as occupation under the census and the most important field of women's work is thus ignored. But apart from that nearly one in three of women and girls over 12 have some gainful occupation-5,000,000 out of over 15 millions. "The proportion of girls is high until the age of marriage is reached. It rises from 3.8 per cent at the age of 18 to 13 years to 78 per cent. of those who have reached the age of 18 or 19 years, After that age the percentage declinen. In the country as a whole married women form less than 1 per cent. of women and girl workers,
