"ONE-MAN" TRAMCARS.
INGENIOUS "SAFETY FIRST" DEVICES.
A new type of tramcar is to be put into service on the London United Tram- way Company's Hanwell and Brentford route. The first of a batch of five now being constructed by the Company, it is single-deck type, and is controlled by
of
one man, who performs the dual role of driver and conductor.
In ord
order to simplify and speed up the work of the driver-conductor. the car has been equipped with ingenious mechanical devices
many of which are automatic. Doors are operated pacumatically and work in unison with the steps. They are automatically prevented from opening whilst the car is in motion by means of * special valve.
When the car is 'at a standstill the exit door will not open unless Passen ger is waiting on the rear platform ready to alight, because the door is itted with
valves controlled by treadplate on which a passenger must be
be standing in order to open the door.
A further interesting safety-first" device is the so-called dead-man grip with which the air-brake handle is itted. If the driver takes his band off this, the brakes are automatically applied and the power shut off

The experiments made have proved antin factory, and the car has left to scheduled time, although working in with double deck tramears on the same route.
