SABANG FLOATING DOCK.

SUCCESSFUL TOWAGE BY DUTCH TUGS.

The following account of the successful

towage of a 3,000-ton floating dock from Ymuiden to Sabung (North Sumaträ)

has been received frons a correspondent Your voice is

of Lloyd's List at Rotterdam-

On July 18th, the two sea-going tugs Willem Barende: (master D. Moerman) and anderen (master D. Sprut both vessels belonging to the ilver of Barenu Wijsmaller, Rotterdaay-sailed" from Yauiden, towing a 3,000-ton Boat- ing dock, constracted at the Nederland- sche Scheepsbouw Maatschappij. Ams terdam, and to be delivered to the Sabang Bay and Coal Co., Ltd., at Sahang. On October 18th, bath the tugs 'and their tow arrived at he port of des tination in splendid condition. having covered the distance from Yamtiden to Sabang (7,780 miles) in 22 days. During the entire voyage the "dock did not put into any port, except when passing through the Suez Canal, this being part of the towage route. The tugs called in turn at Aden. in order to replenish their bunkers, whereas daring the passage Aden-Sabang only the Plumiere) call ed at Colombo, also for bunkerig poses only. The View Barends, hav ing a large bunker capacity, covered this distance (3 days) uninterruptedly.

À MIDDEN GALE-

A Budden and terrible storm occurred on the night of July 17th. and the tugs with the dock, which were then in the neighbourhood at the Sanders Light- ship, encountered the full force of the heavy gale. The following description of the scene is extracted from a letter writter, by Capt. Moerman: At 11 c'clock at night we sigated the East Goodwin Lightship, and shortly after the wind shifted suddenly to the S.W.; fast-falling barometer and the wind con stantly increasing now and then clear sight which enabled us to ascertain our whereabouts Ab 130 a.m., the wind shifted again from the S.W. to the N.N.Warunteter 746, violent storm. In no time the dock was blowii out of its' ordinary position "at our stern athwart of us and remained there, while together| we were drifting to feeward. It became dangerous for the two tugs in this posi tion to tow side by side and in order to prevent accidents, the Flaanderen had to ship ber slip bawsers, and the Willen Burende drifted alone with the dock straight or to the Sandetti Light- ship, of which the bearing, influenced by wind and current (it being Hood tide) did rot change in the least.

At 6 am, bowever, the tide turned and the bearing, which hitherto had been continually S.E., changed, and we now drifted at about 4 mile west of the light- vessel. After passing over the 31.fathom shoal of the Sardetti Bank, We were blown together to leeward, the stomp re- maining in full force, and slowly we drifted straight on in the direction of the Rustingta Bank. I fully realised our dangerous position and instructed the engineer to get the utmost power out of his eng ans. Fortunately, the force! of the gule gradually decreased, and with the ebb-tide setting us to the west, we could hold our own, and did not. drift any longer to the dangerous shoals of the Ruytingen Bank. It was not necessary to work the engines at their atmont speed any longer, and the wea ther getting gradually better, "enabled us to bold the dock, ned even' to move ahead, the lock coming gradually straight behind us, after which it was all plane sailing. However, we experi enced a very difficult time, and this so shortly after the departure from Ymui- den under the most favourable aus pices.

From the above, it is evident that, in trying to save the valuable object entrust. ed to their care, the endurance of both the crews and the tags. was taxed to the utmest. Both the tung left Sabang on October 31st for Sourabaya, from which latter part they are to low dredging

material to Melbourne.

SUBSTITUTE FOR PETROL.

A REMARKABLE INVENTION:

#

Thanks to the invention ofta Bussian" engineer, Makhouine, attached to the Ministry of War, write" & Paris, cor respondent, authorities Gere believe that very shortly France will be entirely inde pendent of foreign hipplies of motor fuel, which will be replaced by crude oil, coal tar, and other common substances rich in vegetable and mineral oila. Makhoaine's invention consists of a device which, install- ed by the side of the motor, o averts, these things into fotor fuel without any pre- liminary treatment. The invention has undergone a series of strict tests at the Artillery Laboratory at Vincennes, the experiments being controlled by a com mission representing the Ministry', of War. The results achieved have còn- vinced this body of experts that they now hold the solution of the national fuel problema. M. Paul Painlevé, whose techincal and scientific knowledge enable him to speak with authority on the subject, lina. declared, after a close examination,” that this invention, which enables motors to be driven by products of coal distillation, is of the greatest national importance. He considers that it should be perfected in alt its details, and applied without delay. One remarkable thing about it is that it does away with one of the greatest dangers of present-day motoring, for the fuel is nug-inflammable until it is in the cylinders of the motora, Yes combustion is declared to be perfect, and without either smoke or grense, and there is a substantial increas of engine power by compatisk with the, results obtained on petrol
