It is true that, notwithstanding this removal of more than 1,750.000 tone of shipping, the mercantile feet of the world is even now greater by, about 15,000,000 tons than it was in 1914, but on-the other hand, it is well regnised that there is a large proportion of the faid-up tonnage which is unlikely ever the Undersigned Goods remaining unclaimed Bill of Lading wil be coustenigned by to be able successfully to seek for efter Bonday, the 18th December, 1924. at ployment. so that some of the vacant the shipbuilding yards will be cupied." It is recorded that there. were, at the end of June last, 461 vessels, of 1.641.243 tons gross, actually being built throughout the world ander the Special Survey of Lloyd's Register, with view to classification in the society's register book. This tonnage shows a considerable increase on the similar figure for June, 1923, but it would be un vise to attach too musi importance to the fact, as it appears that, while several orders for passenger liners and vessels for special trades have been placed, few inquiries are being made for cargo vessel of ordinary types"
**THE OIL ADE
During the twelve months ending June 31st last, vessels of only 395,660 tons were classed by the society in comparison with upwards of 2,000,000 in the year im- mediately preceding the outbreak of the war. The development in the past ten years, has been the creation of fleets of oil tankers, as figures extracted from this Register Book in dicate: In July, 1914, the oil tankers (steamers and motor-ships) were of 1,478,988 gross tons, but now their ton page is 5,243,238 That oil is rapidly taking the place of coal in merchant ships is indicated in this report.
During the year forty-five vessels, of 242,182 tons 27.3 per cent of the total tonnage of new vessels classed were it- ted for burning oil fuel for steams raising The following table, comprising all such steamers recorded in Lloyd's Regis ter Book, shows the gross tonnage of vessels either originally fitted to burn oil fuel, or subsequently converted for that purpose... The figures for 1914 are given for comparison with those for the post-"

These figures refer to vessels which are fited with installations for burning
in the furnaces of their boilers but it must not necessarily be assumed that all these vessels are using oil. It will be understood that a number of such install ations can readily be replaced on occasion by coal-burning fittings when oil is un- obtainable or when its prite, compared with con is so great as to render its use unprofitable.
THE COMING OF THE MOTOR-SHIF The number of motor-ships is steadily increasing, quite apart from the vessels which can burn oil under steam boilers. Whereas ten years ago there were 237. motor-ships, af 234,267 gross tons, now there are 1000 of 1,975,709 gross tons. The internal combustion engine is still, however, in process of development. The period covered by the present report is Doteworthy for the introduction into actual service of double-acting Diesel en gines and the great increase in the num ber of such engines under construction, and the report of Lloyd's Register gives particulars of varions, other types of en- gines which have been adopted by ship owners including the Boot-Hill combined oil and steam engines, on the one hand and the Diesel

It is evident from this report of Andrew Scott, the secretary of Lloyd's report of Mr. Register, that a revolution is occurring at sea, and that the Register, under its unique constitution, which embraces ship- owners, shipbuilders, and underwriters, is taking no men part in moulding events-aily Telegraph.
