Acceded to the request made by me in the summer of 1849, for allowing 100 sick Soldiers to be placed on board the "Minden"; and it is therefore evident the Vessel could at that time have received that number, had not the order alluded to, prevented his meeting the wishes of the Major-General.
4. In consequence of this Order and the inability of Captain Trombridge to allow the 59th Regiment to be taken on board the "Minden", the Major-General has been compelled to hire Vessel (the "Coromandel") for their reception, thus causing the Government an expense of £1,000, the sum stipulated to be paid for the Vessel for two months from the 19th Instant, the date on which the troops were embarked.
5. But it is not on the score of expense above that I bring this subject directly before Your Lordship. Between the 20th of June, the date of the Major-General's application to Captain Trombridge, and the 19th Instant, when the troops were embarked on board the "Coromandel", no less than 71 men of the 59th Regiment have met their death.
It is far from my intention to have it inferred, that all these men have died in consequence of the "Minden" not being allowed...
