INTERPORT CRICKET.
A SHANGHAI VIEW. Z
The result of the Shanghai-Hongkong match was a great disappointinent fa the followers of Shanghai cricket, writen a correspondeut of the N-C» Daily News. Our team was as representative as any XI. which has visited Hongkong for many years, but it failed for many and diverse reasons. Firstly, the luck of the guine, always evident in cricket, was badly against 119. Secondly, our bowlers, particularly. Wilson, bowled much below form. This does not apply to Quayle, who bowled far better than Ee has done for years and whose luck was heartbreaking. He repeatedly bent the batsman and just missed the wicket.. Thirdly, our Selding was at least 30 per cent below that of Hongkong. This don not necessarily mean that our fielding. was very bad,
Taking the light into consideration, we felded averagely well, but that of Hong- kong in our first things was undoubted- Jy the most brilliant exhibition seen in our Interport cricket. Bowker, at cover, is in the first fight and would shine in- any company, Owen-Hughes, in the alips, was better than good. These two were.. well backed up by the whole side, of whene Quick and Hargreaves showed up fre quently. Bowker also has possibilities as a bowler on the fast side. His energy is phenomenal and with greater accuracy he should do well Reed bowled a good length, as usual, and, helped by the wicket, was not easy to play. Our bats- men undoubtedly played badly, but each mistake coat a wicket, and every catch went to band and, caught 7
moreover,
was
SHANGHAI'S HAD LOCK-
an im- Our second innings was not provement on our first. Everything went wrong. Barnes, Quayle and Barrett were all out, bw, in two overs The benefit of the doubt did not come our way, yet one cannot help thinking that the Hong- kong side was the better of the two, but
The Palice Footballers" easily de-not a great deal better Webster played feated the Police Cricketers."

pretty cricket, but was lucky, and Har greaves got runs in a somewhat in- orthodox manner. These two batamen won the match for Hongkong.
O'Hara seemed to be out of touch with the surroundings and did not "hold the stuff." Behind the wicket, Barnes was at sea. The wicket did funny things and he seemed to lose all confidence. In fact in this match he kept worse than be cau ever hope to keep again. It anus be admitted, however, that the wicket was. indifferent. The Hongkong wicket, with its peculiar light, never has been good, but in this series it was distinctly worse than usual One could never tell what would happen. To put on F. E. Foster on such a wicket would be little short of manslaughter. O'Hara remarked that good bowlers (meaning himself :) "bound net bowl on such a wicket-it was too bad! It required bad bowlers; like Bar. rett, to get people out However, the wicket was the same for both sides and Hongkong beat un fair and square.
After giving an account of the Sang- hai Malaya match, the writes can- cludes:
Hongkong beat Shanghai by an in- nings; Shanghai beat Malaya by 90 odd ruas; Hongkong beat Malaya by 2 wickets. These results make Shanghai very nearly, but not quite, da good an Hongkong and this supposition is about
correct
PRINCELY HOSTS.
As usuni, the hospitality shown us by Hongkong was princely Their staff work and organization loft nothing to be de Bired and the interport dinner was the best attended and the most successful ize the annals of Interport cricket. Shang-. bai must make an effort to get Tientsin ar Japan to join in a triangular contest with Hongkong in the near future.. Buch meetings do so much for the game we love, and help to promote that spirit of friendship and rivalry which is the back- bone of the greatest and best dit alfr British games, cricket.
THE CHINESE WAR.
1T8 ALLEGED INSPIRATION.
Mr. Lenox Simpson (Putnam Weale””) in n eigned article in the Far Eastern Times alleges that there is evidence that a catérie of Chinese politicians promoted the present war for the purpose of creat ing conditions under which they could compel a settlement of the Sino French
frane controversy, thereby releasi $10,000,000 (Mex) which they intended to divide among themselves. Ten "milion dollars is the portion available from: total of 870,000,000 involved.
