There are developments of the amazing story of the spurious Marquis de Cham-B peaubert." who rented a castle near Dinard, and made all arrangements for committing a big jewel robbery by means of chloroform. He had all the under ground rooms padded with mattresses, and when the employees of the Rus de la Paix jewellers arrived with the jewels ordered they were to have been thrust into these padded rooms and sent to sleep by chloroform pumped through holes in the ceilings. The value of diamond and pearl necklaces, bracelets, and rings in tended as gifts to his wife on her birth- day amounted to several million franes. Once in possession of the jewels, the "Marquis had made his plans for leav ing the castle in a swift motor-ear.

This socalled Marquis de Champeau bert, whose real name is Passal, though had masquered under various aliases, has had a singularly dramiftic career, Acting with him were two women, his wife and his mistress It was the latter who posed as the Marquise, and she, too, has been arrested. Passal has made a confession of the plot he had prepared: In his statement to the police he de eläres that it was not his intention to put the jewellers' envoys to death. After they had been shepherded into the padded rooms it would have been useless for them to raise the alarm, for their cries would not have been heard. He would have to set the pump to work and then noted the effects of the anesthetic. The robbery effected, in was his intention, to let air into the rooms, place the choloformed mer on soins. and then drive away. Pasual and his wife are now in Saint Male Gaol, and his mistress will join them there. They will be charged with attempted murder and robbery. murder charge will be preferred because for the moment Passals statement that it was not his intention to cause death does not seen to be credited.

THE PADDED ROOMS.

The

In fact, the police authorities are going to make experiments in the padded rooms. M. Savidan, Public Prosecutor, M: Boucly, Examining Magistrate, and Dr. Boudinière, Professor of the Faculty of Medicine at Rennes, will subject a dog, a hen, and a guinea pig to the chloro- forming method devised by Passat, and they will watch the effects on the animals through the peephole in the ceiling. It seems that the Saint Malo police are of opinion that it was not Passal's fault if murder was not committed.

The facts of the adventurer's life show him to be a man of infinite resource. Not so long ago he was a pigeon breeder at Saint Aubin, Then he transformed him- self into a veterinary surgeon and went to Paramé, where he ordered the 140 lbs. of chloroform found in the cellars of the castle. Subsequently he and the "Mar- quise went to an hotel at, Dinard, liv ing on the best, drinking champaigne at every meal and hiring the finest cars." When they entered the castle they changed their mode of living, and Passel got busy. Pre- paring the padded rooms and installing the chloroform pump meant work.

The fact is that, normally, eating is pleasure, and good food a delight. Indeed, us soon as eating ceases to be a pleasure, we know It is a that something is wrong with, as danger signal. It is • Nature's warning that our food is not being digurted cadily and naturally. I is also a hint to remedy the trouble at once, since we must either digest our food or malfer the consequences. Now the immediata resulta of impaired digestion are pain and discomfort. Then, sooner or later, coms loss of strength- and breakdown.

Even a schoolboy knows that we derive our strength from food, and by food alone va repair the daily wear and tear of the body. Obrinialy. too, food is only food when is feeds you. you don't thoroughly and naturally digest its you can't expect it to do you good.
