Hongkong, 22nd August, 1850.
S. G. Bonham, Esquire,
Governor of Hongkong,
My dear Sir,
I take the liberty of addressing you personally on the subject of the Colonial Secretary's Official letter of 19th instant, addressed to the Trustees of St. John's Cathedral, as the absence of the Chairman and the short interval till the despatch of the Mail render it impossible to call a meeting at present.
Yet it is of so much consequence that there should be no misunderstanding at home on the question at issue, that I cannot refrain, as an individual trustee, from offering a few explanations on certain points in that letter, which I fear might otherwise lead to misapprehension.
It appears to me that there must be circumstances under which Mr. Cleverly, the Architect of St John's Cathedral, was employed on the Grounds on which he expects remuneration for his services.
Letter from Mr Cleverly, 17th August 1850.
