Mr. C. B. Mortlock, who writes “Church Notes" for the London Daily Telegraph Bnyཟླ་:༠༠
It is officially announced that tho Prin- cipal Registry of the Archbishop of Can- terbury nail the Vicar-General's Office for the issue of Marriage Licences has been moved to No. 1, The Sanctuary, West- minster, S.W. I. This marks the end of an interesting chapter in the legal and literary history of the City. Originally the College of the Doctors of Civil Law, founded by, Dr. Henry Harvey in 1869, Doctors' Commons, in the course of the next century, became the seat of various branches of the civil and ecclesiastical judicature.

The voluntary cession of Fiji to Great the part of King Thakombaa, leader of the Fijian chiefs, who foresaw only the ruin and rathless exploitation of his country under the so-called Constitu- tional Government set up by the mixed white colonists in 1871.
Britain in 1874 was a defensive act on
END OF CANNIBALISM.
Many of these colonists were adventur. ers of an undesirable type, and under
their Constitution, which made Thakom-
bau nominal King of Fiji, they had taken care to invest all the political pawrr in their own hands. By playing upon the cupidity of some of the lesser chiefs they had succeeded in alienating large tracta of communal land from the rightful native owners. And they even went so für as to maintain that electoral fran- chise should be confined solely to them selves.
The result of all this was a period of bloodshed and disorder, which, but for the good atatesmanship of Thakombau. might have continued until the decima tion of Fiji was complete. British rula at once put an end to these conditions and restored the old communal owner- ship of land, which still remains intact, the Government acting as truetes. Among the other advantages that have accrued to Fiji under 50 years of sympathetic British rule, two stand out prominently the complete disappearance of canniba- Fism and heatheism, and the saving of the Sue Fijian race from threatened ex- tinction by disease.
Less than a hundred years ago Doctors' Commons still retained its old activities and old appearance. Steerforth, it will be remembered, described it with great pun- geney to David Copperfield. What is a prector, Steerforth said LWhy, he Steerforth. He is, to some faded courts is a sort of monkish attorney, replied held in Doctors' Commons-a lazy old nook near St. Paul's Churchyard-what solicitors are to the courts of law and equity. I can tell you best what he is by telling you what Doctors' Commons is. It's a little out-of-the-way place, where they administer what is called ecclesiastical law, and play all kinds of tricks with obsolete old monsters of Acta world know nothing about, and the other. of Parliament, which three-fourths of the fourth supposes to have been dug up, in fossil state, in the days of the Edwards. It's a place that has ancient monopoly in suits about people's wills and people's parages, and disputes among ships and
Seven years after "David Copperfekt " was written, Doctors' Commons lost much of its legal importance by the institution of the new Divorce and Probate Courts, and in 1874 its Will Office was transferred to Somerset House. It remained, bow, ever, as the recognised locality for the granting of marriage licences. The office still possesses the complete set of Mar- riage License Allegations received there since 1860. Fitly enough the creator of Sam Weller, who drew such a diverting account for Mr. Jingle of the temptations to widowers of the vicinity of Doctors' Commons, himself obtained & marriage licence there on March 28th, 1838, for his marriage with Catherine Hogarth.
During the Great War Doctors' Com- mons achieved an unprecedented cele brity. Thousands of Scences were issued to soldiers by the offices already mention- ed, without which it would have been practically impossible for soldiers to have the front.
