NEW ATLANTIC PORT. PLYMOUTH SCHEME TO BERTE BIO LINES.
14 HOURS GAINED.
The arrival at Plymouth, last month. of the Canard liter Mauretanie from New York has greatly encouraged the supporters of the scheme for making Plymouth, a regular port. for the great Atlantic liners, says a Plymouth corres pondent.
Already the White Star, the French Transatlantic. and the German lings are regularly using Plymouth Now that the Cunard have sent the Mauretania to Plymouth twice in three weeks, and also tha Berengarit, those who for more than w years have been arguing the advan tages of Plymouth over Southampton have hopes of their claims being recog nised.

QUICKER MAILS.
Mr. S. Stephens, the Mayor of Flytruint due to the exercise of that sacred mouth, said
"Within an hour and a half of a vessel's reaching the port passengers and mails can be on their way to Loudon and any part of England. Fourteen hours are saved by landing mails at Plymouth. The Continental lines have realised the importance of our harbour as the first port of call, and we have now gained re cognition by the White Star and Cunard

Experience proves that gambling pares the way to theft, and the Church needs boldly to rebuke the vice and not to touch the unclean thing."
Dr. Cyril Norwood, headmaster of Marlborough College, in a paper on "The Problem of Intelligent Belief," said faith was a mero bet that on two or mare possible interpretations one was. more likely to be right. It was unintelli- gent to think to-day that Christianity re- quired one to believe that man was created a fixed and, in a way, a finished type some 6,000 years ago and that he fell from the stato of innocence in order to enable God to show His love for men by the sacrifice of His Soa.
A remarkable story lies behind Sir Robert Baden-Powell's reference (in the Times), to a bold plan he has recently was unintelligent to believe in a pre. seen for diverting the London section of cisely mapped-out purgatory, and a heal the Thames to the south side of its pre-when we knew that this earth was but a heaven above us and a local hell beneath rent course, and converting the present bed of the river into a great road through the heart of London.
This proposal (writes a Daily News representative), which at first sight would appear to be impracticable because of its Kreat cost, was put forward by Sir Robert's brother-Mejor B. F. 8. Bader Powell, Scots Guards.
It was first given to the public in novel termina book, "London's Transfor- mation, published some years before the war, by Messrs. King, Sell and Olding (no longer in existence), who then car ried on business in Chancery-lane.
PROPAGANDA BY FICTION.
The book," Major Baden-Powell told the Daily News "did not sell well. My royalties were small, few, and far be tween I hoped that by turning the idea into a story, with characters and plot, it would get talked about. I do not think I succeeded.
My scheme was to dani the Thames at Hammersmith, take the river around by canal. first to link up in part with the River Wandle at Wandsworth, and then cut the canal across the low lying coun try immediately south of the Crystal Palace, and finally to rejoin the present Thames somewhero. near Woolwich.
The Thames bed, raised and well drained, would make a magnificcas road- way right through the heart of London, wide enough to provide for (as my brother saysya motor road, a path for cyclists, a heavy traffic way, and possibly an electric railroad.
The chief character in my little book) is an American financier He gets the idea, forms his syndicate, raises the money, and transforms Lordon....
"I never troubled to estimate the cost of constructing it-civil engineering is merely a hobby of mine. Until my bro- ther mentioned it to me the other day, I had forgotten all about the scheme and its possibilities.
But personally I think my idea was about 50 years" premature."

OPINION.
Proposing The Institute of Certifica ted Grocers," Sir. James Crichton- Browne at a dinner given at the Troca dero to the Institute of Certificated Gro cers by Messrs. Bovril Limited, on September 24th said that the study of vitamines had thrown £ flood of light on difficult problems in relation to nutrition generally, but he said emphatically that the average man with an average appetite and an aver agoly diversified diet need not bother his head about them. We had been told that we were eating too much "Don't you hohave it! has advisalmi tremenorra out- improvement that had taken place in the health of the people and the great decline in the death rate had been largely attri butable to the increased and the more varied supply of food to the people.
