GERMAN TRADE WITH THE
ORIENT."
BEFORE AND SINCE THE WAR
Mr. CC. Bacheider, former representa Live of the U.S. Department of Com- merce in the Far East, told the Institute of Politics at Williams Town that stud- ents of the Dawes plan bad concluded that on the markets of the Orient depends
ed the possibility of Germany selling'
enough manufactured products, to pay
the large sums of money due to the allies.
41
In all the discussions of the Dawes plans," Mr. Bachekleg said, Kreat stress is laid upon the fact that it will be very difficult for Germany to pay to the allied powers the large sums called for by its terma except from the purplus of its exports over its imports. As the purchasing power of Russia, Turkey and other countries will evidently be much less than before the war, it will be diff- cult for Germany to sell abroad as much as before the war unless its other cus tomers buy more. It hardly seems likely that the purchases of Europe and North and South America will be increased enough to make up for the deficiency,

The opinion of this trade expert, how. ever, is not shared by the present chief of the bureau of foreign unit domeatic commerce. who invites attention to the returns which show that although Ger- man trade with the Orient had increased' in value in 1993 by thirty per cent over
pre-war years there was little increase in quantity. In the opinion of E. R. Eldridge, so far as Far Eastern trade with Germany is concerned, there ap pears to be little that the Dawes plan can accomplish in the way of restoring to Germany its pre-war Oriental markets. It is a revelation to those not familiar with the rapid return of Germany in the Far East to learn that in Germany's four principal markets-Japan, Chian, Nether lands East Indies, and India-the amount of imports from Germany" dur- ing 102), was 30 per cent, greater than). during the pre-war year of 1913. The s trade of these countries translated into dollar shows that while they imported but $108,377,000 worth of Germany's pro- ducts in the pre-war year, their imperts last year totalled $142,316,000. Taking into consideration the higher price levels in these countries, which averaged about 60 per cent. in 1993, there is little abso- lute increase in quantity for imports Trom Germany, although the value of German imports shows, a substantini gain.
The Far Eastern trade with Germany during 19 is compared with that of the pre-war year 1013 in the following

somewhere, sir, and it is quite true.
When you get a Kensitas for the first time you look at it suspiciously, as it were, sir. Then you light up-after the first whiff your face changes to what I might call, sir, the "Kensitas" expression.
Then I can see from your face that you are pleased and satisfied that Kensitas
