No. 1 is a

copy of a letter dated 25. May, 1844, from Sir John Davis, late Governor of this Colony, Colonial Chaplain, stating, that H. M. Government to the Reverend Vincent Stanton, would pay towards the erection of a Church the double of what the Community would subscriber.

No. 2 is a letter dated July 8th, 1844, from the Colonial Secretary, the Honor. F. W. M. Bruce, stating that His Excellency, the Governor in Council undertook, on the part of H. M. Government, to contribute a sum two-thirds of the expense of building a Church, but mentioning at the same time, that, should the cost exceed £9,000, H. M. Government would not contribute more than £6,000.

No. 3, is a circular paper, dated 10th July, 1844, issued by the remaining members of the Church Committee, formed in 1842, intimating to the community that the Governor had engaged, on the part of H. M. Government, to give a grant of £6000 towards the erection of a Church, provided the community subscribed £3000.

No 4 is a letter dated 24. January, 1847, from the present Colonial Secretary, the Major, intimating, where the money subscribed by the Community was to be deposited, confirming again, the engagement on the part of H. M. Govt., and stating that, in the event of there being any surplus after the completion of the Church, it was to be placed at the disposal of subscribers, these papers explain clearly the nature of the contract and engagement entered into between H. M. Government and the Community. and we must presume that, between 1841 and 1847, H. M. Government was fully made acquainted with the character and
