TRADE IN CANTON. In-some notes on the trade of Canton for the June quarter the British Vice- Consul says the figures for oil imports are rather interesting, as showing that American oil is gradually losing the market and that its place is being taken, by oil from Bornea or Sumatra, import ed by British firms. given to Cantonese industry by cheap Jabour is typically shown by the decrease in the import of indinrubber boots and shoes from 30,010 pairs in Jane quarter of last year to only 2,842 pairs in the same period of this year.

Turning to exports, mats alone show any great increase of about 15 per cent, -and the export of tobacco has been fairly well maintained. all other classes of exports, oxcept cassia, show decreases, - das to disturb conditions in the interior, military operations, "and" interference with shipments, the junk strike, which held up all water-borns traffa for over a fortnight, and a growing tendency to increase internal taxation. Canton hea in the past generally recorded an in- crease of exports over importa, but if pre- sont conditions are maintained it may soon have 'the reverso."
