IMPORTANT "SUGGESTIONS HY THE CORONER."

CIRCULATING ORDERS FOR SHIP'S WORK.

The Coroner's enquiry concerning the denth of a coolie on board the as. Tiren on September 4th, was erntinued at the The Kowloon Magistracy yesterday: eriquiry which was Erst opened on October ard, was prasided over by Ma E. W. Hamilton Lient.-Comdr. Conway Hake, R.N.R., was present at yesterday's sitting of the Court and sat with the Coroner 45 Asaresor. P

It appears that the coolie descended into one of the holds to work cargo and when down below he collapsed and died.

Yesterday afternoon evidènce was given by the Chinese, foreman in charge of the coolies, who said that the Chief Officer gave him instructions to open the hatch | and to get to work. The foreman said he did not see anyoné inaking a text.as to purity by lowering a chicken into the hold.

This was all the evidence called yester day and the Coronem remarked that there was a conflict of evidence between the Chief Officer and the foreman of the coolies regarding the testing of the purity of the air in the hold. There was also A confict of evidence between the Captain and the Chief Officer. The Captain had said he told the Chief Officer to make the test and the Chief Offer had said he never received the order.

am of opinion that all such orders, which refer to the general working of the ship (that is excidding private instructions to Master), should be put in writing by the Master and should be circulated to the officers cotoned who should sign them. Had this been done in the case of the Tiren the misunderstanding be- tween the Chief Officer and the Master could not have occurredor could the

of the precautions which the Company wished taken.

When the man was "overcome" I .con- sider that all possible steps were prompt- ly taken and that the Chief Officer and tindal showed great courage in attempt- ing to rescue the man without waiting for smoke helmets.

HIGHWAY ROBBERY CHARGE" RICKSHA COOLIE'S TALE OF AN UNWELCOME "FARE."

Leung Hung" Kwan, a carpenter, Au Hing, boilermaker, and Mak Kam, an Ex-P.W.D. watchman, appeared at the Central Magistracy yesterday afternoon, charged with robbery with violence from A ricksha coolie on September 29th. All thred admitted stealing.

The same men are awaiting trial on ä charge of robbery with violence from Mrs. Deacon, of Broadwood Road. Tais case, however, will not be tried until Mrs. Deacon, who was admitted to hospital as a result of her experience, has re covered sufficiently to attend the Court

At yesterday's hearing," the ricksha coolic, giving evidence, stated that at about 8.45 pm. on September 29th he was engaged in Saipan Street by a man who told him to go to Kennedy Road Witness did so, and in Kennedy Road thefare" jumped out and seized him by the collar of his jacket from behind. At the same time, three men who had been squatting at the side of the road, came up, two being arined with daggers. They took from witness a leather purso with $140 in 10-cent pieces in it, and a Jadestone bangle valued at $5, which was on his left wrist. All four then ran away westwards along Kennedy Road. It was dark at the spot, and witness could not see any of their faces clearly, nor "could be identify any of them.

His Worship: Not even your "fare"? -No.

The first defendant denied that he had a dagger, while the third declared that he held up a cigarette-bolder in the guise of a dagger, to frighten the com- plainant.

The men were remanded until Wechnica day next, when it is hoped that Mrs. Deacon may be able to give evidence in the second charge
