EMPIRE'S BONNIEST BABY COMPETITION.
The search for the Empire's Banniest. Baby, which the National Baby Week Cout- cil (117, Piccadilly, London, England) can. ducted in connection, with Imperial Baby Week (July 28th to 31st) at the "British Empire Exhibition, proved to be a very great success. Many thousands of babies from all parts of the Empire were eis tered, and the Champion' was disenverrit to be an Austrálian. The other first prize winners were found in Canada and in Newfoundland. Entries for the Competi- } tion were received from even this far. thest parts of the Empire-from East Africa South Africa, West Afrien, Aus- tralia. Şew Zealand, Canada. India.Cey- lon, Stratte Settlements. Singapore, Ber. muda, Borneo, Egypt, Palestines France. Gibraltar, Malta, British West Indies. 'British Guiana,' Curicon, China. New- foundland, Switzerland, Kenya Colong, Nigeria. British Army on the Rhine, as well as from the British Isles, cutries came. In some parts of the Empire-- British Isles, Australia South Africa

In each of the Sub-Competitions the judging was co ducted according to Council adopted in to the lines which the National Baby making its final selections, and in this way, as far as possible, uniformity in judging Wa obtained. Entry was by means of photographs showing the competitor unclothed. Each photograph had to be accompanied by a score sheet on which were asked ques. [. tions regarding the child's physical con dition, nge height, weight, namber of teeth, age when the baby first sat up. stood up, and walked without support, method of fooling (natural or artificial). In addition, the fudges required to know whether the baby had had feeds during the night and whether it had any cer tan specified defects or had suffered from any illnesses. Each score sheet had to be signed by the parent or other respon sibie guardian, and by the mediend prag- titioner attending the child. Thus it will be seen that the Competition was largely a health competition.
On the final judging Committee were, medical experts, men and women speri ally qualified in the examination of child- ren, two well-known artists-Sir William Orpen, R.A., and Mr. Steven Spurrier. cil; Lady Nott-Hower, Hon. Secretary" of the National Baby Week Council'; Mrs Jean Muldrew, of the Canadian In- migration and Colonisation Department. On the medical side there were, in addi- tion, representatives of various parts of the Empire' Overseas.
The competitors were divided into three age classes-3 months to 9 months, muths to 2 years, and 2 years to 5 years.. The Champion Baby, Mary Patricia Wilson of Australia, reccived £200; each of the first prize winners in the other two classes, £100, and the remaining 13 on the prize-winner list each received £20. In addition these money prizes, Messrs Woodward, Ltd., presented each of the prize winners with a silver porringer and spoon, and Messrs. Milkal Ltd.. gave a silver tea service to the mother of the Champion, baby. British Isles triplets, Sheila, Patrick and Denis Girton. received a Consolation prize, a Dunkley Safety Pram. These prizes were presented by Her Grace the Duchess of Norfolk at a grand Presenta tion Ceremony arranged by the National Baby Week Council, at the British Eu pire Exhibition on July 31st.
