At this moment a Chinese put his head into the car. Mr. Sanderson, quite unsuspicious, got out to see what was the matter, and was immediately struck on the bead from behind by a wea pon which looked like a reaping-hook. He resisted. but was then set upon by five Chinese, several of whom had books or knives with which they struck him.
One of his assailants dropped a small package which he then tried to seize, but he was struck again and almost lost consciousness. The last thing he saw was something-which proved to be the seat of the car being removed by his assailants. The latter, having wounded Mr. Sanderson, and apparently put him out of action tarned their attention to Miss Davenport, who managed to get out of the car, and ran down the road screaming for help. She was also savage- ly attacked, sustaining severe cuts on ber head, and one of her hands.

Despite the heavy rains of last week, the W25 in fairly good condition course though naturally on the heavy side. It was on the whole a day for favourites, the biggest upset being Grey Dragon's defcat in the last race by Roman Par-
rot,
The outstanding feature of the meeting was Dr. Kew's victory in the A FORTUNATE ARRIVAL. Although suffering from no fewer than six head-wounds, cuts on the hands and elsewhere, and several braises, Mr. San- derson insisted on driving his own car to the Hospital. Mr. Dick took charge of Miss Davenport until the two cars reached the vicinity of the railway, when he decided that it was necessary to ac company Mr. Sanderson, who was weak from loss of blood and the shock. The two victims were driven straight to the Victoria Nursing Home, where they were promptly attended by Drs. Irwin and Grice,
During the afternoon there were two slight spills, which are described below.
An excellent programme of music was provided during the afternoon by the Regimental Band of the East Surrey Regiment
Following are brief descriptions of the various races
strongly Although Woodpecker was tipped to win the opening race of the meeting, he was not by any means the favourite, Cottongrass being the backers' faney Woodpecker started well and led the Beld round to the home straight when Cottongrass, lying well back, came through and won comfortably. Just be fore leaving the paddock," Cottongrass reared and tell on his jockey (Mr. Harri- man) who, luckily, was uninjured and was able to take part in this and sub- sequent races, winning four of them.
