In the early part of last century horse stealing was carried on ns a regular trade, more especially in the Scottish border country, where many celebrated gipsies have earned their living by the by the cavalry and as hunters. These horses were stolen in Ireland and dis posed of an "Scotland while the opposite course was also followed of stealing harses in Scotland and selling them in Ireland; and a similar trade between Scotland and England.
Gipsies in Spain, besides dealing in mples and asses, bave made the trade of slipping or shearing these animals preuliarly their own. In the same coun- try many of the innkeepers are of the Romany race; and most of the women employed in cigar and cigarette factories are gipsics, while the gisay dancing-girl of sunny Spain is known in every capital in Europe. It may not, however, be sa generally known what an intimate con. nection the gipsies have with the national apart, and that many of them have be. come noted toreros in the bull-ring.

The heavily timbered pine country lying. along the western boundary of Glacier Park is the scene of the exploits of the hunters. With their dogs which are a cross between fox-bound and blood-hound, the men go to their job armed only with a coil of rope and a twelve-foot pole.
The dogs sernt and tree the lion; then the game begins. The hunter atunches the noose of his lariat to the end of his
pole, then gets up the tree, and crawls out on the same limb with the lion, until he comes twelve feet of his crouching prey. Wrapping both legs around the bough, he swings pole and Inriat with both hands until the animal has been Toped. He draws the noose tightly around the victim's neck, and desernds, holding the loose end of the rope.

The captive is then yanked from its Perch, and dragged to the tree, in spite of sharing and struggling, until its head is tied close to the base of the trunk. It a simple matter then to bind its legs and slip a heavy leather muzzle over its jaws, Bound, gagged, and jawung over the hunter's shoulder, the liön is carried in triumph to the temporary camp.
DEACKSMITHS. · Employed
blackamitha, 23 gipses dwell in caves on the hillside of the Sacro-Monte-a miserable suburb of Granada. At one time these gipay work- || ers in iron were put down by the more approved gipsy fashion, support Spanish law, but owing to the irrepress themselves as fortune-tellers, vendors of ble nature of the race the trade was charms and philtres, conjurers, dancers, allowed to crop up again, and it has now and mountebanks; and sometimes they been vigorously carried on for genera-practise the arts of gold and silver- tions. There are some occupations which are not only specially followed by the gipsies in certain countries, but are actually monopolized by them. For instance, the gipsies in Montenegro have a monopoly of iron-working. The blacksmith in that -country, in no smith in our sense at all.. He is supplied with horseshoes of various sizes by the gipsies who make them, and only hammers them on. A monopoly in the working of metals generally is largely enjoyed by the gipsies in south- eastern Europe and in Asia Minor, and according to Grellmann, gold. washing in Wallachia and Translyvania has been practised from time imaitmorial, and in his day was carried
en almost entirely by gipsies.
In Hungarian and Transylynnin the duties of hangman and execationers tard. to be performed regularly by gipsics; and in Egypt the art of snake-charming was wholly monopolized by the race. But perhaps a more striking instance of mono. poly occurred several years ago at Cadiz. The butchers trade in that town-bap- pened to be entirelf in the hands of the: gipsies, and they were prepared to go any length in crime-not even excepting murder in order to secure this lucrative business to themselves. An Irishman named "O'Reilly was governor of Cadiz. at the time, and being, desirous of im- proving the state of the public markets.. be established a number of Trish butchers. But this praiseworthy attempt on the part of the governor to bring down the price of meat was the very last thing that the Gitanos desired, many of them being wealthy men through their impositions. In a short time not one of the Trish but chers survived, while the tradë returned into the bands of the gipsies.
Many and various are the occupations of the gipsies of Persia. We find them passing their time for the Romany seldom works hard at anything except sport and games-as blacksmiths, tinners of brass and iron vessels, tinkers, and cattle doctors; while many of them, in (Continued on nezt column.)
