cotoniere, made history, and drew the admiration of seamen, and then vahish- ed utterly "into the units of oblivion."
One of the most extraordinary ships eger built was the Columbus, launched in 1924 four miles west of Quebec. She was a solid ship," packed with square hlar to evade the British tag on cak nid pine from Canada. The idea was to rake her to pieces when she reached Eng- land and sell the wood. She arrived at Blackwall, but the gowners decided to take some of the timber out of her and Esend her back for more. She foundered Mon.

FLYING LIFEBOATS 'COMING.
SEAPLANES FOR WRECK
1
RESCUES.
"Launch the seaplane!! is likely to hery of the future wheй a vessel is obursed from coastguard station to I in distress.
Consideration is being given by ex- perts to the possibilities of planes and flying boats in effecting rescues 'nt sea. It is believed that there are great op portunities for aircraft in the heroic work how carried on by lifeboats,
Not only could a seaplane carry a life- line to a ship wrecked far from shore, bart aircraft could alight on the water and take off load after. load of men, women, and children.
I
American experts propose to carry out exhaustive tests on the. Pacific coast. It is realised that the days have passed when aeroplanes were frail machines. constructed of wood and fabric and fitted with low-power engines.
Metal has become the chief material in construction, and motors of great power and reliability, such as the 1,000 h.p. Napier Cub, are rapidly becoming standard units. To-day aircraft can Ay safely in half a gale.
Lifeplanes. could speed on their errand of rescue, at a pace of between seventy and eighty miles an hour, even with an adverse wind. The crow, their energies unexhausted by battling with heavy seas would rench a doomed ship fresh for their work.
SALVING "LAURENTIC'S"
GOLD,
BROKEN LEG GAINS £250,000.
Success has attended one of the great- eat salvage feats on record-that of re- covering the gold ingots and silver specie from the wreck of the liner Laurentic, sunk by a mine off Lough Swilly (coast of County Donegal) in January, 1917, while engaged as an apxiliary craiser The rumane connected with the opera tions, which will be completed within a few days, has just been made known. The Laureatie sank with bullion worth $7,000,000 stored in her holds. Salvage.. began in 1918, but owing to bad weather the resalts were poor.

RECOVERED BELLION.
Under tons of wreckage were more than 200 of them, each weighing between 14lb. and 281b. and worth about £250,000.
At once it was decided to suspend ope. rations pending better weather, and in the summer of last year nearly all these bara were brought to the surface and transferred to the Bank of England.
On Saturday the salvage ship left again for the Irish coast to recover a few remaining bara transferred by the divers to another part of the ocean-bed some distance from the wreckage.
It is learned that bullion worth more than £6,000,000 has been recovered, The cost of the age is less than £20,000.
