Mars is now getting very close to the tive of the Ubaerver by Mr. W. Larkam,

In countries of a high northern latitude it have hitherto been difficult to cut, bub

Yet in spite of this we have already been able to see much that is of interest: and the interest of it seems likely to increase as the weeks go by,

modern methods are overcoming this
difficulty.
The next most important stones, sap- phires, and their red variety, rubies, come chiefly from Barmah, Cashmere, Ceylon, and Australia Outside the Em- pize,
Siam and Montana also produce them. Emeralds have a somewhat dif
relationship ferent
to thu Empire. It is the southern hemisphere of Mars Whilst India is the only source of supply which is now tilted towards the earth within the Empire, practically the only Thus observations this year will be emeralds that are now being mined como almost entirely confined to the south polar snows and the other markings that from South America. At the present time lie south of the equator.. It is now about we are working on, that is to say re- the middle of spring in Mars' southera duced by India (and also by Siberia) cutting, the fine stones which were pro- hemisphere. The spring equinox was perhaps hundreds of years ago. No new May 12th and midsummer's day will be supplies are coming from India, but an on October 8th.
expedition is starting shortly for the East for the purpose of re-exploring the regions which were worked in past cen turies and possibly opening up again the old mines.
At the two poles of Mars are large white patches of snow, very similar to those in the arctic and antarctic region of the earth. These vary in size with the Martian seasons. in the winter" the knowcap of the corresponding temisphere grows to an enormous size; it reaches down to within Afty degrees of latitude of the equator, and has a diameter of about three thousand miles. And in the summer it dwindles to what appears be a mere speck, its diameter sometimes falling below hundred miles.
The greatest extent of the snow is, at tained some time after midwinter. It then begins to melt; but it is not until about the equinox that the melting sets in rapidly. There then appears about the edge of the snow-cap a very dark band-the South Polar Sea." It scrius
that during the slow melting of the cap the water is conveyed away as quickly as it is formed; and only later when the melting becomes rapid is the water able to collect sufficiently to form an open sea. It was once thought that the band was merely an illusion, an effect of con- trast due to the brillianet of the white cap. It is now practically certain that it is water. For, in the first place it only appears when the mows are melting in the second, the light from it is" polari sed."
as is only the light coming from liquid surface; and, in the last, the spectroscope reveals in the atmosphere above it the presence of water vapour.
TWO BRILLIANT SPOTS, A
Garnets come to us from most parts of the world, and there is only one variety, the Bobrowska, green garnet, of Russia, which is not found in British Possessions. Most of the finest and rarest stones, including the beautiful Ceylon rose garnet, come from some part of the Empire. Egypt is the home (and Persia also) of the turquoise. Jargoons, or zircons, the beautiful blue variety of which is a new stone on the market since the war. come from Ceylon, the home also of the crysoberyl and the cat's eye and alexandrite, which belong to the same family.
Chinese jade, so fashionable at the pre- sent moment, comes from Burmah, and owes ita pame to the fact that it is worked by Chinese. Most of the fine, rich, red-coloured amber, which is sold as Chinese, is also found in Burmah.
The Empire holds practically the market for pearls. Indian and Aus- tralian pearls are unrivalled. From Aus tralia. too, come the finest opala, both black and white varieties as well as fancy. Even the Mexican fire opal, so called from its brilliant, deep red fame colour, is repeated in Australia. Ame- thysts and the lesser fancy stones come from all parts of the Empire, and from all parts of the world for that matter. The only faney stone of any im- portance which is not found in British Possessions is the yellow topas, which comes principally from Brazil. White and blue topaz is found in Ceylon and Aus- tralia.
Already this year the melting of the snow is well under way, and the diameter of the cap has been reduced to less than fifteen hundred miles. Three or four dark rifts have appeared in the snow; and these nze remarkable, for instead of growing inwards-as they usually do- from the polar sea, they seem to have originated within the cap and subs quently extended outwarda; nad one of them was, for a time almost at the cap's centre, isolated upon all sides. 4 strange pole-cap. This phenomenon does not generally occur until the summer is well advanced Although it is frequently put down to "steaming," to the rising of vapour, it is more probably due to partial "moiting of the snow whereby patches of the underlying surface are xposed. But perhaps the most interesting phenomenon is the appearance of two very brilliant spots lying upon the bor- ders of the snow, upon the shores of the BURSCHISED AND PAID OF polar-sca.
BE FUND They are probably main- tainous regions whereon the snow clings fastest,
With the exception of diamonds, which are cut in Holland though many" are now also cut at Brighton, the finest of all precious stones are cat or recat în London.
Of the rest of the Martian surface. there is little to be said, except that the dusky markings, which lie scattered over the bright pinkish 'background of the general surface, are extraordinarily pale. Their pallor is due to the carliness of the season, for it is generally found that they are rather, pale during the winter

Recent restriction by the United States upon the number of immigrants allowed to enter the country in any one year have led to a great increase in the number of persons illegally entering the United States by way of the Canadian border.
