There was never the slightest doubt about the result, and Mr. Montmorency's second victory in a field comprising many Scottish players of note was exceedingly popular on the part of a crowd of several thousand people, who followed the game with tremendous keenness, despite n heavy downpour of rain in the afternoon.

The semi-finals provided one surprise, the defeat of Mr. Robert Duncan, a cele brated St. Andrews artisan player, by Mr. Killes Mr. Duncan, who is a cleek maker, and 'is handling golf clubs almost every day of his life, is the champion of St. Andrews, having recently won the Freddie Tait Memorial Medal Frankly, I was not impressed with Mr. Duncan's style.

Instead of the free-swinging, rhythmical movements associated with the old St. Andrews golfers, his style is laboured, heavy, and even stunted.. He employs a curious form of interlocking grip, which seeuw to cramp the swing altogether.

THE LOSER'S LOST CRANCES.

Mr. Duncan had many chances, but he seemed incapable of profiting by them.. For example, at the twelfth hole, where he had a simple chip to play from the edge of the green to the neighbourhood of the hole he fumbled the shot and only half hit the ball. He had another glori ous chance of getting on level terms at the seventeenth, where Mr. Killey pulled his iron shot into the next parish. Mr. Duncan, who seemed dreadfully afraid to hit the ball, was short, and allowed his adversary to snatch a half. This sort of thing occurred over and over again, and, to be perfectly honest, Mr. Duncan richly deserved his fate. He was beaten on the lant greca by a hole rather unexpectedly.

SCOTTISH SPORT. ABSOCIATION SEASON OPENS. [FROM OUR OWN COLRESPONDENT]

EDINBURGH, Augnat 20th.

The Scottish soccer season started in the most depressing weather, rain falling In almost tropical intensity. There were no sensations, and while it is too early to indulge in prophecy, it is evident that the clubs who played the principal arts in last year's tournament will again prournent
