SOLVING MODERN PROBLEMS. VISITORS AT HOTELS

LORD ASTON'S ADVICE

Following a luncheon at the Imperial Hotel, at which Mr. Robert Evans, the founder of the City of London Course in Education, presided. Viscount Astor ad dressed the members.

Lord Astor said he was impressed, as he went round addressing various meet ings, by the fact that in every party there were people of vision, courage, and patriotisu, all doing wonderful work. In these days, however, something more than a mere, repetition of broad policies and programmes was Beealed. Owing to the war the ordinary normal slow and steady evolution was not lequate to meet our modern desire for progress. We were faced with the whole question of women's rights aver property, over her children. marriage. and other nich problems. Even the House of Lords at the moment. was discussing whether or not peeresses in their own rights should be admitted. and the main argument so fur brought forward against it appeared to be that. while it might increase their efficiency. i would undoubtedly impair their dig nity. (Laughter. People were challeng ing religion, and were asking whether in the future it was to he mainly a rere- monial observable on Sundays. Was it

What was needed now was people who would go ahead and blaze a trail through the jungle of catchwords and con- ventions which held them up. People who would go ahead of their party were the kind who were wanted to-day. The trouble here, as well as in America, was that pre-war parties would hot fit post- war conditions.
