LABOUR'S SIX MONTHS
OF OFFICE.
MR. SNOWDEN'S COMPARISON.
Mr. Philip Snowdon, Chancellor of the Exchequer, speaking at Greenfield, in the Colne Valley Division, on August 9th, claimed that the six months record of the Labour Government would compare favourably with the record of any former Government When he beard criticism by both the other parties that the Govern nient had not yet fulfilled the whole of its programme he felt almost pity for their knowledge of political tactics, He had a good deal more faith and higher opinion of the judgment and common) sense of the people of this country, who did not expect them in six months to HA and solve the whole industrial problem.

always said that the employment pro "hem could not be solved in a day or a week or a year, and that normal - playment was inevitable in our present industrial system. Their criticism of the other parties was that they did not look ahead and prepare schemes when trade was good.
When he introduced his programine of national reconstruction a week or two ago the only criticism brought forward was by Mr., Lloyd George and the Liberals and it was that the Labour Party, had takru the Liberal, programme, Mr. Lloyd George was in office and power far seventeen years, and why had the schemes still remained in the Liberal pro- gramme. Mr. Lloyd George said he had brought some old kippers from the Liberal barrels, where they had been stor. ed for seventeen years. Mr. Lloyd George was a great master of metaphor, but that gifs of metaphor was very dangerous. cause the Liberal programme might be described as sticking fish. Not one pro |l that he (Mr. Snowden) made to Parliament a fortnight ago originated in the brain of any Liberal statesman. Ins it was quite true that some of the pro- posals were appropriated for electioneer: ing purposes by Mr. Lloyd George and the Liberal Party.
-
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 13TH, 1994
After reviewing the work of the past Session, Mr. Snowden said if it rested with the Government the next General Election would take place four years hence. He did not think there was much 'desire in either of the other two particu to precipitate an early General Election.
Referring to the London Conference, the Chancellor of the Exchequer said it was a difficult probleni with which they had to dral. Mr. Lloyd George had thirteen of these conferences and he never succeeded in settling anything. The Labour Party took up the work after six years of bung ling, and were trying to bring order out of the y European chaos. He did not minimise the difficulties, but they had narrowed down the issue to two or three Laportant points. He admitted they were important, but no: insuperable, and'he confidently hoped that in the next few days they, would be able to record a diplomate triumph which would prove that, not only in the sphere of domestic affairs, but in the more difficult realm of International polities. Labour had the statementship, the vision, and great idrals, and they had succeeded where others had lamentably failed.
DISPOSAL OF THE DEAD..
THE PREJUDICE. AGAINST CREMATION.
To find a means of popularising this method of the disposal of our dend,” said Sir Thomas Horder, the famous phy- sician, presiding at the third annual con- fercheu of cremation authorities, held at the British Empire Exhibition on August ist, is the problemn we have to solve." The present method in this country (Sir Thomas continued) was very much an ex- pedient or a makeshift. Our cemeteries, increasing yearly in number and size, hemmed in the urban dwellers and dis- higured the landscape, and as yet neither our civilisation nor our culture had found in equally satisfactory and popular sola- tion of the difficulty. The arguments for cremation on the ground of sanitation and economy did not seem to strike the popular imagination, and he thought a stronger appeal might be made to the public from the sentimental and esthetic point of view. Cremation could be in- vested and surrounded by religious and sentimental ideas which were quite as deep and inspiring as those which attend- ed the more popular method.
Bishop Gare said: It requires only very little knowledge to become completely. disgusted with the process of earth burial when you have to deal with crowded po- pulations and great towns, such as those of our industrial civilisation. I cannot entertain a doubt that the process of cremation is one infinitely cleaner, healthier, more decent, and more respect. ful than anything that can provided by earth burial and decay." A certain form of prejudice which still haunted the imagination of a great many people arose from the conception which prevailed in quite unscientific age that there was a resurrection of the, dend by the re-collec- tion of the material atoms and elementa of the dead body at the end of the world. That idea could not make itself articulate because, first of all, the idea of such re-i constitution was quite impossible if they redected even for a very few moments on what actually became in the lapse of years of the particles of the body. It was quite unintelligent, and also it had really no reference to the question of cremation as opposed-to-burial, because, Raa matter of fact, cremation only did more rapidly what in any case ultimately occurred.
