The past week has been a brisk oao in the local marketa, and rates in most in. stances have shown an improving ten- dency China Sugars, Whamper Docks and Kowloon Wharves hare received con siderable attention and have been thờ medium of a large turnover, while there has been a good general investment de- mand with higher quotations all round. Owing to the political situation in the North, the Shanghai market is dull.
Banks-Hongkong and Shanghai Banks in spite of the rise in Exchange have advanced from $1,200 to $1,913 and busi- ness has been done at various rates be- tween. The market closed with sollers At $1,910. The London price has receded to £133.
Marine and Fire Insurances-Caiona have received a "fair measure of support and have risen to 39. Cantons have been booked at $720 and continue in request.. Hongkong Fires havé moved up to. 8600 and Chian Fires to $186, - Under- writers are wanted at $17 and Yangtzes at $201.
Shipping-Hongkong, Canton & Macao Steamboats have experienced a set-back. the market falling is 845, but there baa since been some recovery and sales bave been made at 847. Star Ferries are also easier and have been doalt in ut 8101/109. Douglas Steamships could be placed at * and Leferred Indes at 8116. Tug & Lighters at 331 and Waterboats at 2164 are unchanged.
Refineries-China Sugars registered a further improvement and were negotiated to a fair extent at $110 for cash, and as high as 840s was paid for October. Mala bons at $16 contitue neglected.

Docks, Wharves and Godowns.--Hong- kong and Whampoa Docks, further. strengthened and were negotiated in fair quantities up to $190, but the demand appears to have been, satisfied. Hong- kong and Kowloon Wharves after sales at #213 receded to $210, but more. de- mand has since, set in and the price has recovered to $134. Shanghai Docks were dealt in at Tia 923, but close easier with sellers at Tis. 02. Hoogkew Wharves are enquired for at Tla 194). New Engineer- ings at Tle. 6 shew no dange.
Lands, Hotels and Buildings,Hong- kong Lands are a shade firmer and have 'been dealt in at $1173/118. There are buyers of Realtys at $2.15 after transac tions this rate. Hongkong and Shang- bai Hotels contious very fat and can be had at 823) and $23 for the old and new shares. Humphreys Estates are in re- quest at $23.
Cotton Mills-There has been no busi ness in this acution.
Miscellaneous-Green Island Cements (combined) have been offering freely and sales as low as 8901 were made, but there bas since been a recovery, and buyers prevail at $994. China Providents have been taken at 817, while the new shares bave advanced to #8. Dairy Farms have beca put through in fair quantities at $28. Hongkong Developments have fetch- ed $1.10. Penk Trams have hardened and could be placed at 8201. Watsons have again come to business at $20. Hongkong Ropes (entabined) have changed hands at $6 Lane, Crawfords have been negotiated at $181. MANAGERS COMMISSIONS.
· INTERESTING PROBLEM TAKEN TO COURT OF APPEAL.
The question as to the nature of the commissions which ship managers are entitled to take was dealt with in the Court of Appeal recently, when the mem- bers of a Cardial firm appealed against a judgment under which they were direct ed to repay a num' received by them as commission on the sale of a steamer. It so happened that they were, at the time the vessel was' nold, directors as well as managers of the company owning her, and they contendell that the money receivi ed by them for their services in connec tion with the sale of the ship was legnily acceptable The Master of the Rolls, how- ever, held otherwise. He drew attention to the fact that there was no agreement fixing the commission to be paid on the sale of the ship, and while agreeing that. the transaction was married through in good faith, it was, he ruled, wrong in faw, and said that the services which the appellants performed were rendered in their capacity of directors of the steam- ship company.

L-The Willys-Knight car is the four cylinder motored car that makes the six
unnecessary.
The Knight motor is steam prinsiple. The valves are two cylindrical aloeren with rectangular klots or paris which when they register with each other, and the ports in the block allow the ingress and egres of the gasce without obstruction. These wide open passages, particularly on the exhaust side, permit a more thorough cleaning of the barnt gases from the combustion chamber than any other type of mator, so that every ounce of energy available is utilized from the explosive mixture, which gives us such tremendous power
2-It has no valve to grind and no carbon to clean.
The combustion chamber is completely surrounded by water and an alloy piston noted for its great heat radiating qualities is used so neither the combustion chamber nor the head of the piatan geta hot mough to bake the residue from the exposed gases to form carbon while there is still anough heat maiklained to handle the explosive mixture affectively.
-It is the only type of motor that improves with use.

All parts in the Willys-Knight car are assembled with wide clearance between each other and oil is forced into these clearances under beary pressure so that the entire assembly is lapping or wearing in on these heavy fins of oil instead of wearing out. In other words, every hearing in this motor is an oil bearing instead of a metal to metal bearing which is necessary in the constraction of a poppet valve motor în order to keep it quiet with subsequent quick ́wear and noise
