CHILDREN'S DREAMS.

HOW TO GET VALUABLE INFORMATION.

AN AM TO CHILD-WELFARE

In the following article, Dr. C. W. Kimmins, the well-known authorite on children, discusses some of the differs ent types of dream which are experi enced by children..

Dr. Kimmins takes the view that it is both dangerous and improvident to ridicule children's dreams, as they can often serve as a valuable indication of

the state of the child's mental and physical welfare.

Lay R. c. w. RIMMINS:]

The dream has an extraordinary fascin- ation for the child" The air of mystery surrounding it, the rapid change of scene, the disregard of natural forces, and its striking resemblance to a visual fairy story are elements of special appeal to the child whose soul delights in con- tinuous action and variety.

The collector of children's dreams has no difficulty in gelting an almost embar rassing amount of interesting material, for nothing delights a child more than to relate in considerable" detail the story of 3 recent dream. In a large an of the written descriptions of

quite young children, it is definitely stated that the child related the dream to the family the following morning. In one case the record ends with, other laughed so much that she burst her stays aal had to buy some new ones." The delight in recording dreams is, however, not without its dangers for the investi- gat, for undoubtedly children frequently dress up the story of the dream, All ap the gaps and modify incongruous ele ments to fit them into an interesing nar- rative. The fusion of dreaming" with waking material is naturally a more com- mon occurrence with children than with

elapses between the dream and its record. This element of danger is not, however. confined to children. Then most care- ful investigator in recording his own dreams soon finds that the account writ- ten, immediately after the dream is very different from cre written after an interval of a few hours.

The late Dr. Rivers not only recorded his "dreams immediately on waking, but proceeded sraightaway with the analysis. In this way he had comparatively little dificulty in obtaining the necessary free- associations which play such an important part in the interpretation of dreams.
