The managing director, Mr. Elphin- one, who accomplished much useful work, during his visit to North Borneo early in 1923, proposes again to visit the country during the coming winter, and Mr. W. Barrow, the court's adviser un railway matters, also proposes to minke a farther examination of the railway. As usual, the cost of these missions will, with your permission, he voted by the court of directors. The Court are much pleased that H.3. the King has recognised the long and faithful services to this company of Mr. Harrington G. Forbes, the former secretary, by granting him the Order of the British Empire. It affords them much satisfaction that distinguished and loyal services to the cause of the Empire by the officers of this company are now being recognised by the Crown, and that the Royal favours conferred on civil servants in neighbouring colonies such as Ceylon and the Federated Malay States are now to some extent being shared by North Borace,

PRESIDENT'S RETIREMENT.

Ladies and Genticmon, The progress report to which you have listened has fully explained to you the affairs of the past year. It remains for me to offer a few general observations on the position up to date. Although in the year 1925 there was no marked increase of prosperity, think you will agree with me that the year's results give no ground for despon dency. It is true that our hopes of a re- vival of trade have not materialised, but the industrial activity of the country has on the whole been satistautorily main. tained. A bright feature is the steadily rising ratio of exports to imports. For

I would like briefly to refer to one or two of our leading industries. Although the rubber industry is in a distinctly healthier position than it was two years ago, economy is still the order of the day, wholly and solely to use their resources and the companies are chary of embark a developing the territory and promot ing on any considerable extension of their ing the welfare of the native population. operations. We have reason to believe that the various concessións recently made, particularly the grant of free pas sages and of cheaper terms for land, will attract Chinese, in greater numbers than heretofore. It is a matter for much sutis- faction that the reports we receive from time to time leave no room for doubt that the Asiatic population is healthy and con- tented. We deeply regret the loss of two promising young officers in the early part of the present year Mr. J. W. G. Hills, who died while on his way to Tambunan, in the interior, and Mr. O. E. Woodward, who fell a victim to gangrene poisoning.
