THE SIBERIAN ROUTE. PEKING TO LONDON
THE PRICE OF RUBBER. RECENT DEBACLE * A BLESSING IN DISGUISE."
It may interest people who did the
Messrs. Sanderson and Co. the well- journey before the war, but have hesitated from doing it since, to know that the known London rubber merchants in their trip from China to England vid Siberis latest report" to hand stato that the and Russia is once again not only pass market continues to move upwards. „The ible, but with very few exceptions-demand principally from New York haa extremely comfortable. I have just done centred for the most part on spot and the journey from Peking to London with nearby positions, and the premiures on my small son of five in sixteen days. We forward positions tend to diminish. I started rather against the advice of the prices improve materially, na is possible. Consul in Peking, and certainly against we may see this position still further the advice of most of our friends; so I accentuated in view of the fact that was doubly pleased at being able to cable, first from Moscow, and two days later from Borlia, to say that we had had a splendid trip.
higher level of price will induce pro
ducers to well forward, and the higher level automatically releases more rubber for sale.
Several points appear to stand' ont I have the knowledge of asian, but rather clearly: one that the market de I found German very useful, as it is pression ruling in Alay and June, when understood in most places. All officialy the price of spot declined to Bid., was and passengers were most courteous ad not justified, but was initiated by very obliging, and the latter were always skilful and persistent propaganda by-in- ready to step in and trauslate when neces-terested parties who were aided in their sary. A drawback to the journey is that efforts by bad marketing methods on the one cannot book a through ticket. This part of producers. Another point is that, necessitates taking a good deal of money in spite of successful attempts to terrify of different currencies, and it is there the market with exaggerated statements regarding the increase in Dutch native fore rather difficult at the end to know production, the bald fact stands out that exactly what one has spent; but the jour shipments of plantation to the end of June hey can be done comfortably first class are 1,850 tons less than last year, and total world shipments are less by 8,358 on about £80.
toos. Therefore, unless it is assumed that the consumption of the world is do creasing, it is manifest that consumers cannot afford to lose the 5 per cent. from the British-owned Colonies even for three months. We maintain that the present rise, though rather sudden, does not by any means bring up the price to a lovel which is either high or justified by the present situation. It seems clear that consumers are in a dangerous position until the level of price rules at 1s. 3d. or over. On the whole, we are of opinion that the recent debacle in May and June has been a blessing in disguise, and will serve as a very salatory lesson both to consumers and producers.
Chervonetz and gold roubles are the best currency to take, silver roubles being only accepted at half tasir face valuc, and in many places they are not accepted at all. For reserve money American notes are best, as they can be cushed in the dining car and at all the banks; but in Moscow I failed to cuali twenty dollar gold coin. However, I found that the Russian Commercial and Industrial Bank there would cash American letters of credit and, of course, travellers' che

DEPARTURE FROM CHINA.
York at increasing values. There has also been a better trade demand from the Continent, probably encouraged by the better political outlook.
We left Peking on a Tuesday evening
Messrs. Symington and Sinclair state and arrived in London sixteen days later.
the advance has been due mainly to We had an uneventful three days trip American buring, and a considerable busi rid Mukden and Harbin to Manchuliness has been done on c... terms to New which we reached in the afternoon, leav ing again at the same evening. That night was a very agitated one, as we got to the Siberian frontier about midnight and officials kept of coming into our carriage first to look at our passports and later, on to examine our luggage, The examination as a very thorough one; may three suit-cases were well-search- ed. Every little box and bag was open- ed by the Russian oficial, who took the greatest interest in my various belong- ings, but did not confiscate anything except some English newspaper cuttings which I had in my writing ease. He went off with them and I never saw them again.
NECESSITY FOR RE-BOOKING.
We reached Chita on the fifth day after leaving Peking, and here we had to re- book and change into the train which was to take us to Moscow. In Chita a crowded scene of confusion took place, quenes were waiting at the booking office. and here we might have been left behind if a kind Russian had not offered to take our tickets with his. As it was, we only got on to the train when it was moving off, and passengers who had heavy lug gage saw it left on the platform. It.cer- tainly is better to limit one-self as I did to very little and only hand luggage: On leaving Chita we found ourselves in
comfortable and clean carriage of the Wagons Lits International 1914 model, and we were given a two-berth coupé where we were able to settle down com- fortably for the eight-day run to Moscow, which we reached, absolutely in schedule time.
Though the two carriage attendants spoke only Russian, we got on very well. On arrival in Moscow they socmed quite satisfied with a tip of five roubles per. berth. For the present it is not advis able to attempt travelling second class, but i believe the railway authorities are shortly going to put new second class carriages into commission.
COMMISSARIAT ARRANGEMENTS.
Statistics for London for the week end- ed August 9th were:--Imports, 796 tons; deliveries. 1,246 tons; stock; 31,409 tons, against 49,178 tons a year ago and 71,780 tons in 1992.
Forward contracts for, rubber have late- ly been entered into at 1s. 3d. por Ib for next year, and higher rates for de liveries in 1926. As a result of the better prices in some responsible trade quarters the view is now entertained that should the existing stage of restriction function to the extent of lifting the price to the pivotal 1s. 3d. per lb. co-operative sell- ng may not materialise as a submitted scheme for some considerable time, and. possibly, not at all. This, however, is mere surmise, and must be regarded with due reserve, remarks a financia! daily.

CINEMA HOTES,
THE WOULD THEATRE.
There was a dining car on the train, but the food was indifferent and the prices were high. For most of the jour ney we picnicked in our carriage, as ex- cellent food can be obtained very mode- rately at all the stations, exactly as in pre-war days. We stopped at many stations, but only long enough to take fuel and water. The stations were all clean and well kept; several of them were being whitewashed, and there were signs of quiet prosperity on all sides. I had been told that all books and play ing cards and writing paper would be confiscated, but this is not so. I had Robert Thornby's new and novel drama quite a dozen books, both English and of the sea, into one of the really big sub- French, Also cards, and I was allowed jects of the year. It is being shown at to keep them; but on leaving Russia the World Theatre to-day only. cameras were confiscated.
