farmers at cost price. With the "funds supplied by the Silk Association of America, the University has distributed 13,000 young mulberry trees to two new centres, which will be producing raw silk within the next two years. Plans had already been made for the erection of a modern steam flature, but the shortage of cocoons, combined with the disturbed ́political situation, prevented their matur- ing. Another factor, and a serious one. which seeris likely to interfere with the industry is taxation. It is said that the privilege of collecting silk taxes--which includes the taxing of the mulberry trees has been farmed out by the local authorities for the sum of 825,000. H this is correct, an industry which with encouragement would be capable of yield. ing several millions of dollars per year will be strangled at its birth.

SHANGHAI TRADE:

Messrs. Ilbert & Co.'s Piece Goods Market Report of August 9th, says :—

The war clouds have been gathering thick and fast during the week and it Row seems that hostilities can only be avoided by a miracle as the opposing armies, said to be well equipped with aeroplanes and heavy guns, are taking up position in the neighbourhood of Soo- chow some being as close to Shanghai as Quinsan.

The effect on trade has been the total dislocation of communications by land, rail and water over a very wide area, wholesale commandeering of launches, junks, and coolies, and abandonment of their homes by large numbers of people; native banks have practically suspendicul operations, clearances have fallen of almost to nothing and there has, of course,, been no fresh buying of any des cription, while the auctions have all been suspended for this week.

A

In other centres also, principally Ningpo, Bangchow and Hankow the monetary stringency is very severe and practically no remittances are being made to Shanghai on account of adverse ex- changes.

GREEN ISLAND CEMENT CO.

INTERIM DIVIDEND,

The Directors of the Green Island Cement Co., Ltd. have declared an In- terim Dividend of Fifty (50) cents per share, the same as last year, but this should not be taken as an indication that the same Final Dividend (which must necessarily depend on the result of the working for the current half year) will be paid.

The Mechanical Grate Kilm at the Works at Hok On is now turning out some' 32 tous dinner per diem as against 15/17 tons produced by the old Aalborg Kilns, A second Kiln is now being erected, and two further Kilns have been ordered for the Macao Works. These additions will, of course, materially reduce the cost of production, but it will probably be at least 12 months before all these Kilns are in- stalled and working.
