There is a distinct fashion in drinks. Since after-midnight dancing-instituted the necessity for a tasty snack, beer has become a quite mart drink-after midnight. Elegant women and correct men consine an egg and piece of grilled bacon, or a grilled inarrowbone, at 2 a.m.; and drink with it a small glass of ale: It is the thing" But offer these fashionable folk a glass of beer at lunch or dinner nud you will be frozen by a glare of horrified surprise. Beer is all Very well-at the right time..

Chagpague is brought under this od han of fashion also. It is culgar to drink it for lunch, but quite current to have i for dinner. But a singular thing is happening to stampagne. With the re- vival of private entertaining chunipague is losing its fashionableness, It is in- variably seen on the tables of the now. rich and of wealthy Americans, but not so often, on the tables of the best people.. That is because the best people cannet afford to give their guests the best cham pagne and only the best is permissable- In every dinner party.

Champague is really falling to-day into its proper place--it is becoming the mark of a very special occasion. A dinner and dance is a special occasion, but not a very special occasion, Wherens formerly a hostess would scarcely insult her guests by allowing water to be semy on her table or the buffet at her dance, she never fails now to have a carafe of cool water-it must be cooled. waters, mineral waters. plaindeed-water and various fruit caps are what people drink to-day at lunch time. Many sensible people drink nothing at lunch-which is good for their digestions but bad for all the drink business.

Fruit cups, alcoholic and otherwise, are in great decaed especially at dances' and all sorts of indoor and outdoor fune tions. But they are invariably, served properly with ice, and are poured from a jug whose mouthpiece does not allow the fruit to fall with a plop into the glaze. Cider cup is another characteristic drink of the present day-the King has a not- able bin of it in his collar.

TRIBUTE 10 NURSES.

Distributing the prizes to the nurses at the St. Marylebone Hospital, on July 24th, the Duchess of Atholl, M.P., said a great deal of a nurse's work might be described drudgery, but it required a great amount of thoroughness and ex- actitude... Nursing held a deservedly high place in public catcem. It gave them them, intimate and innumerable relation- ships with other people, and there were few things that more "enriched life than intimate contact with people in circum strnces different from one's own. Co operation between the public bodies which had to provide the bealth services and the nurses doing work in voluntary an sociations, was a combination which mennt a great deal for the health of the people, "and" one which she hoped would develop in future years.
