A REMARKABLE JOURNEY,
ACROSS THE› DIMALAYAS BY
MOTOR-CAR
This is the remarkable feat just accour plished by Lieut-Colonel V. A. Haddick, FR.G.. the Mount Everest Expedition lecturer, and a small party, organised by Sir Francis Younghusband and Alajor No says the Statesman,
setting themselves the almost incre dible task of crossing Sikkim and nego tinting the imzalayas, the party, not without considerable hand and mis hap, succeeded in reaching a joint within sixteen miles of the Tibetan frontier, over country never previously traversed
y niechanica. vehicle.
A special tractor was used for the journey, of a type similar to that which crossed the Sahara, It has several wheels, engaging on a band tread which enibles the machine to overcome secu ingly impossible obstacles. The weight falls on the main wheels thus acting as a pivot, and enabling the front of the tractor to lift over rocks and negotiate sharp gradients.
The tractor was named Leinster," for sentimental reasons--that being the name of the province in Ireland from which Lieut. Kolonel Haddick hails, and also the name "of the ducal family" to which Lieutenant Fitzgerald of the Royal Tank Carps, meriler of the party belongs
Mr. A. Percita, director of the Everest fil laboratory in Darjeeling, who is well known in the photographic world, Mt. C. Milwright, and Mr. J. Condell completed the European section of the expeslition. Interviewed in Calgatta by the State wor Lieut. Col. Haddick toki a remark, able story of adventure not, however, without its lighter side.
Leaving Darjeeling at the end of April, the first stage of the journey lay. along the
Peshok road to Kalidong, noted for its steepness and hazardous bends, which was covered with such coun- parative ease as, to be dismissed by Colonel Haddisk without romment From Kalhupong to Pedong the first two miles, presented little difficulty then came a first taste of the old Chinese trade route.

LAST CHANCE TO SEE —
(THE CHARMING COMEDIENNE)
Darjeeling. This piece of ill-luck robbed CONSTANCE TALMADGE the party of an experienced driver,
Passing through Sikkim the party renchel henock and crossed the fron tier. Tere was a marvellous country of high mountains and deep ralleys to which wonderfid blag hazes lent enchantinent.
The rondway is gesserally hounded by a channel six feet deep, which, serves to Farther drain off the mountain rains. along the track becomes a mere shell, cut into the mountain side, which makes progress a difeult matter."
A series of hairpin heads were nego- tiated only by having half the car six- Jended over the Khud. Actually the worst piece of road was encountered he- tween Ari and Rongli where the descent is swift for several thousands of feet and made in a rapid succession of hands.
The special sections of hamboo matting made for parts of the road too narrow iven" for two men to walk abreast with- out danger of a drop down the precipice were particularly useful hetween Ling Tam and eduschin.
Strips of the matting less than six feet wide were placed on the road, and partly everhanging the cliff side, where the party could look down on the clouds be- neath. The car was then driven forward, the weight of the inner wheel and track alone keeping the tractor on the road.
Colonel Haddick paid a great tribute to the skill of Mr. Gundell, the best driver I have ever known, who unfor tunately developed dysentery between Sedunchin and Chatong, and returned to Darjeeling. The tractor is now stabled at Sedunchin, which with the exception of Goatong, is the last place of note before Tibet. Its fate is at present an- certain, but the Leinster may be brought back to India
Although the car remained this side of die Tibetan frontier Colonel Haddick him- sell went into Tibet, from where he has recently returned.
Colonel Haddick, who arrived in India with the photographie party of the Mount Everest Expedition, is shartly to tominence a series of illustrated lectures in connection with the expedition-and the car trip over the Himalajus.
OXFORD ARCTIC EXPLORERS' ADVENTURE.

14 HOURS ADRIFT IN SEAPLANE. The following wireless message was sent from the metor-ship Puber Bjūru, dated Spitsbergen, July 16th-
Shortly after midnight. Mr. George Binney (leader of the Oxford University Arctic expedition) and Captain Ellis (pilat
of the seaplane) were rescued from the expedition's seaplane in a heavy seal,
14 hours. after drifting for nearl "They
set out in the seaplane to fly From Green Harbour, where the seaplane was assembled, to Liefde Bay, where the seapinne base is being established. After an hour's dring the machine made a forced landing on the water, at about 10.43 a.m., and in the early afternoon the fact that the machine was missing became clear to those on board the Polar Björn.
A search was begun, but it was not untit
that the seaplane · was midnight
drifting westward in a heavy sea located to the north of Prince Charles Formand. Happily, both were safe and well, though somewhat exhausted. They are now on board the Polar Björn.
•
Contrary to all expectations, the sea plane, owing to its exceptional seaworthi ness, was salved.
