SCOTTISH SPORT. LIDDELL'S GREAT VICTORY.

BRITISH AND AMERICAN GOLF.

(FROM QUR OWN CORRESPONDENT].

Episarna. July 18th. The world of sport is being driven at high pressure these days, and it is dif heult to kien puce with the events; ha last week some fine results fall to be p torded which must have given pleasure to all Scots who take a pride in the achievements of their fellow countrymen. Best place must be given to the remark able running of E. H. Liddell at the Olympic Games in Paris. The famous Edinburgh University

E. E Liddell, comes of a sound Scottish stock, and his father before him warted distinction in the athletic world asa gymnast and a fercer. That father is better known, however, of James Gilmour, the pioneer missionary in Mongolia, and as an honoured and greatly loved member of the London Missionary Society forces in China. Liddell was hope on furlough recently

the and took a prominent part in Scottish Churches Missionary Campaign. As the father of Eric Liddell he proved a great attraction at big meet ings, discovering a way to the heart of his young hearers through the athletic!

It was at Tientsin, powers of his son.

in China that Eric H. Liddell was born. With his older brother, R. V. Liddell, he came home to this country to this schooling at Elthan College. There the two brothers were, in successive years, captain of the School, and from there both preceeded to Edinburgh University the one to study medicine and the other science. It was at Elthan that Eric put up his first sprinting records and dis played his powers as a wing three-quar ter, but not until he had been at Edin burgh University for some montha did bis uame first come promoinently before the public. It was as one of the famous Liddell Gracie wing, that operated for Scotland so euccessfully in the Rugby internationals of two full seasons, that Liddell first achieved. fame

had "Meanwhile, discerning erities marked Liddell's possibilities on the ruu- ning track, and looking forward to the time when he should be matched with the hest sprinters south of the Tweed, and later, perhaps, with the world's chum pions. That opportunity came in due course, and in the summer of 1993, having sered the Scottish championship sprints for the third successive year, Liddell appeared at Stamford Bridge to compete with Britain's beat, and to dg battle with the English sprinters for the coveted 100 and 220 yards trophies. To the unbound- ed delight of his fellow-countrymen, he not only annexed both title but estab lished new British record for the 100 yards, being credited with 9.7.10sees. in the final. At Stoke a few days later, in the triangular international contest, he not only repeated bis 100 and 20 yards victories, but demonstrated in most convincing fashion, his superiority in the quarter-mile by winning that race after losing 13 yards through being "bored."

The fact that Liddell preached last Sunday at the Scotskirk in Paris ser- ves as a reminder that our champion's ain interest does not lie on the athletic field. To multitudes who know little of football or running the name of E. H. Liddell is fast becoming known as a speaker to young men, whose presence in the pulpit or on the platform shows that the finest athletic prowess often goes hand in hand with enthusiastic and effective spiritual work: Liddell's career on the running track may be drawing to a close, but his great work among young people in the interest of a vital and whole-hearted Christian discipleship is only just beginning, and the effect of that work is likely to be un far-reach-- ing as the fruits are great. China li the goal Liddell has in front of him, and having completed his science course in- Edinburgh University, he looks forward to a period of ecrobined theological training and evangelistic, campaigning before following his brother out to the mission field.

THE DUNCAN-WITCHELL VICTORY.

The Duncan-Mitchell access has been the talk of the week-end, especially in Ecotland; it will be noted that Scottish blood was represented on both sides- Duncan is an Aberdonian, and MacEmith We belongs to a Carnoustie family.
